A Bloody Melody
Chapter Five
It looked deformed, nothing like the dinosaurs we had studied back on earth. It had misshapen, multi-coloured feathers spouting out of its head, teeth like knifes bursting out of a long mouth, spikes travelling down the length of its spine and tail, ending with a ball of long, sharp looking razors. Its skin looked like brown leather and I couldn't help but notice the claws that were extending ever closer to me.
Those beady black eyes that were trained on me glinted in the streaks of sun that pushed through the gaps in the canopy. My thought process stopped completely and was suck on horror and panic. I tried to scramble to a tree hoping to climb it as a way of escape but I had barley even reacted before it leapt forward.
As if the world was in slow motion the dinosaur jumped, both of its clawed hands slashing madly in front of it. I would have laughed at the ridiculousness of it if it hadn't been happening right in front of me, and if those claws didn't appear so threatening. I managed to jump back far enough to not get shredded to bits but 'it' did unfortunately nick my head. The pain didn't register, the only thing I felt was the blood dripping down the side of my face and the will to live pumping through my veins.
I could hear 'it' skid to a stop a few feet away and I wasted no time in running for the nearest tree, the feeling of rough bark under my hand was incredible but I didn't have time to bask in it. Mind-blowing terror had started to penetrate my heart and it was affecting the way my legs and arms worked. I quickly got a good grip on the trunk and lifted myself up and up and up, I tried not to look at the ground but I could hear 'It' breathing so I risked a glance. I was just in time to see 'it' leap off the ground, soar through the air no more than ten centimetres below my dangling foot and try to snap at my leg.
I retracted my leg immediately and scooted along the branch I was sat on. Tears started to stream down my face and they mixed in with the blood that was pouring out of the wound 'It' had just given me. I started to feel an intense throbbing in my head and I reached up to inspect the gash, but as soon as my fingers grazed it I jerked back. The pain had doubled, the bleeding was gushing more than before and I was starting to feel faint. I could hardly see for the blood that was dripping past my eyes and blocking my vision. I looked down to my clothes, if only I had worn something that I could easily tear off. It didn't matter anymore; 'it' was pacing around below me and preparing for its next move.
I quickly wiped as much of the blood away as I could with the bottom of my tank but it was rapidly replaced with more. I could die at the rate I was bleeding. I cried out loud in relief when I saw Ashley and Jenna burst through the clearing, shouting my name, "Lainey."
"I'm up here," I called to them, unsure of whether they could see me or not. I could barely see them.
As soon as 'it' spotted the new comers though it started towards them, I scream at them as if they couldn't already see the danger, "Watch out."
"Just stay there Lainey, we'll handle it," Jenna shouted.
They whispered for a couple of seconds and Jenna ran back through the bushes. 'No, what are you doing,' my mind yelled at her. 'Come back.'
The tears were flowing evermore as 'it' looked in the direction Jenna had run but it soon focused in again on Ashley. I guess 'it' thought that she was the easier target and I couldn't do anything about it. I could only sit, watch and listen from the tree.
Ashley lifted a small pistol out of a holder on her hip, the same pistol that she had pointed at me, but I could tell that it wouldn't do much damage to the... dinosaur. Its skin looked as tough as nails. The dinosaur had started to advance towards Ashley and she started to walk backwards. It was as if they were having a standoff, whenever one took a move forward the other took one back. It didn't just swipe its claws at her like it did me. Then again she didn't scream bloody murder in its face.
