A Bloody Melody

Chapter Twenty Three

I tried to squish the panic that had blossomed as I was pushed into a room. After the man had shoved a bag over my head he had pushed me into a car and promptly started to drive like a manic, not caring that I couldn’t hold on to anything thanks to the restraints.  I tried to pull my hands free but I only succeeded in making them bleed. I tried to ask the man who he was, where he was taking me. But he didn’t say anything. It didn’t matter I had a pretty good idea that this was all Collins fault. Ashley had described the same thing happening to Jenna.

A hand pushed me to the floor. I tried to catch myself with my hands but they were tied so I landed on my face. Which hurt. A lot. I let out a groan and quickly rolled onto my back. The door swung shut with a loud bang and I was left alone on the floor in a room that smelt of house pee and dead flies.

I rolled onto my back, the straw that was on the floor sticking to my clean shirt. Great, this was just great. I was probably going to die here, in this stinky pee hole and no one would know. I would starve to death and my rotting corpse would be found months later.

“Hello? Is someone there?” My heart jumped and a shot of fear flew through my body when someone talked. I hadn’t realised that someone else was in here.

I gasped and sat up when I recognized the voice, but I couldn’t see anything, the hood constricting my view. “Jenna? Jenna, is that you?”

“Lainey!” she exclaimed in shock. “What are you doing here? What happened?”

My whole body sagged in relief, Jenna was okay. She was in front of me. A breeze was coming from her direction and I started to shuffle across the dirty floor, trying to reach her. I had calmed down some at the possibility of her being here. Now I knew for sure that this was Collin’s fault.

“We were stuck in the café. I went to take out some trash, then that stupid guy grabbed me.” I wanted to rub the top of my arm, where he had grabbed me. “Pretty sure he left bruises.”

“Are you alright? No permanent damage?” she asked.

“No, I don’t think so. What about you? Are you alright, everyone’s been worried sick?”

She sighed. “I’m fine, just ashamed.”

“It wasn’t your fault, you know that, right?”

“… I guess.” She shuffled as I finally reached her. I would have held her hand but she was in the same state as me. “I just wished that I’d given him the stuff.”

“I have a feeling that it wouldn’t have made a difference. Collin’s a sick man.”

“I know.”

“Hopefully, if all goes right, we should be able to go home soon,” I told her after a couple of minutes listening to the sound of the night.

“What’re you talking about?”

“Ashley, she’s coming tonight to give Collin the stuff.”

“What?” Jenna screamed. I could feel the force of it as she recoiled away from my body.

“Collin told her to bring all the stuff that you had on him or he’d… he’d kill you.”

She let out a big whoosh and swore, “That son of a bitch. The evil, fucking liar. I swear I’ll kill him. I’ll kill him.”

“What’s wrong?” I didn’t fully understand her concern.

“He’s not going to just let her walk out of here. He’s not going to let us go anywhere.” Something made a loud bang against the wall and it echoed around the room. “Shit!”
