Alice was taking me along for a shopping trip. She had already bought me a new iPod loaded with all my favorite songs. I begged her not to, but she insisted.
She plugged my iPod into her yellow Camaro. It turns out she liked my favorite band, just as much as me. She even belted out the lyrics to Resistance!
Love is our resistance
They'll keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down
Hold me
Our lips must always be sealed
If we live a life in fear
I'll wait a thousand years
Just to see you smile again
Kill your prayers for love and peace
You'll wake the thought police
We can't hide the truth inside
We pulled into a spot close to the door. It was still cloudy out, but thankfully it wasn't raining.
"Come on Clara! We're going to have a lot of fun today!" She seemed especially thrilled about this trip. I was just glad to leave the house for the first time in weeks.
The first place we stopped at was Rue 21. Alice thought they had really cute clothes. She sent me straight to a changing room and continued to grab new clothes for me to try on.
She seemed to know my size, though I never told her. She checked everything I tried on, making sure it looked good.
Whatever she really liked, she sent to the front to be paid for. I think she literally brought me half the store! She just whipped out her credit card, not caring about the cost.
When I asked her why she was doing this, she explained, "You can't just keep wearing all of my clothes, you need your own! I insist. Now don't make me sad, Clara." And then she pouted at me until I agreed.
And boy did the cashiers face drop! It was really funny to look back at.
We walked out of the store just laughing at her expression.
"Hey, Alice?"
"Yeah?"
"Can we go eat Chinese? I'm really hungry."
"Yes!" Then Alice clapped her hands excitedly before we drove off.
As she drove, I pointed to the glove box. "Can I look in here?"
"Yeah, sure. There isn't much in there."
I opened it, straining against my seatbelt. There was a little book labeled Family. I pulled it out and started flipping through.
I came across a picture that really intrigued me. Both the Cullen's and the Hale's were in it. But there was a seventh person. A boy about my age. He was off to the side, standing alone.
He was a lot more masculine than Edward. He had cute boyish dimples and dark colored hair.
When we had gotten to the restaurant, I went ahead and asked my question.
"Alice? Who is this boy?"
She answered without looking. "That's Emmett, my brother." The way she spoke implied something... But I couldn't tell what it was.
"Where is he?"
"He left. Visiting family in Alaska right now. We don't really know when he's coming back. He left the day you came. Now let's go eat, shall we?"
I smiled halfheartedly and agreed. I closed the book and put it back.
I don't know why I felt this way. It could be purely coincidental as to why he left when I showed up. But then again, no one even mentioned him until I had come across his picture.
While we were eating, I had another question I wanted to ask. But I wasn't sure how to.
"Go ahead and ask, Clara!" Alice spoke up.
"Umm, ok. Why did you buy me all those clothes? I know the one reason, but I think there's more to it than that."
"Clara, I think of you as family. In fact, we all do! We don't want you to live alone. We're here for you. We'll take care of you, ok? You're like a sister to me!"
"Alright, Alice. I trust you. I'll stay," and that was enough to make her happy all over again.
Once we had gotten home, there was a huge jeep sitting in the driveway.
"Looks like you'll get to meet someone," Alice commented.
