24. The Past

Malhotra Mansion, 11 PM

Manik and Mukti, after having their dinner, sneaked out of the house for their elaborate 'night out' without anyone noticing them.

3 AM

They returned back at around 3 when they saw Nandu coming out of the house.

Mukti(whispered): Yeh ladki iss time kaha ja rahi hai?

Manik(whispered back assuringly): I know yeh kahan ja rahi hai. I will handle her. You go and sleep.

Mukti(raising an eyebrow): Are you sure?

Manik(gives her a thumbs up): 100 percent.

Mukti gives him a nod and sneaks inside the house.

Here Nandini was scrolling through her mobile and walks till her car. Typing something in her mobile, she puts it in silent mode, throws it carelessly in the passenger seat and starts the car. She stops the car after reaching the forest, her secret spot, the lake. Getting down, she was about to lock the car when Manik gets down from the back seat, startling Nandu.

Nandu(shocked): Tum? Tum yahan kya kar rahe ho? How and when did you get inside the car? Bolo kuch.

Manik(grinned): Tum secretly yahan adventure karne aayi ho. How could I miss such an event?

Nandu(sternly): Manik, this isn't funny. Just leave. Here, take the keys and go home. I will manage my way back home.

Manik(pouts): You promised, you won't push me away.

Nandu(Looking away): I am not pushing you away. I need some time alone.

Manik(sarcastically): For what? Thinking about Harshad?

Nandu(stammered): What..are you talking about?

Manik(accusingly): Oh please, you very well know what I am talking about. Stop pretending now and tell me.

Nandu(helplessly): Why aren't you leaving me alone?

Manik(sternly): Because I have left you alone for so many years, Nandini. Today's the day. I am not leaving you today until you tell me everything.

Nandu(holding his collar, screamed): Kya bataun tumhe? That how he ruined all my thoughts and messed up with my inner peace?

She breaks down. Manik softens his expressions and pulls her into a tight hug, stroking her hair to calm her down. When he felt she had cried enough and still not stopping, he scoops her in his arms and takes her near the lake. Not in a state to protest, Nandu kept crying hiding herself in the crook of his neck.

Sitting beside her, Manik broke the hug and wiped off her tears.

Manik: Kya hua, Nandu? Did he harm you? I won't even think twice to kill him.

Anger rushed inside him thinking of Harshad. Nandu nods in a no meekly. He takes a breath before turning towards her. He understood it's his time to be strong. Strong for her.

Manik(softly): Dad ne bataya, he was your family friend.

Nandu nods in a yes. Realizing she doesn't have any other choice than telling him, Nandu takes a deep breath.
