Prologue: The Wilted Roses

Yang: age 8

Ruby: age 6

(Y/N): age 6

"Hey, Y/N," Ruby asked "when do you mom will be home?" It had been a week since Summer left for her mission. But Ruby and Y/N had the idea of planting the roses before she got home to surprise her.

"I don't know, but I hope she likes the surprise!" said Y/N.

They finished planting the roses and ran inside to watch for Summer's return, Tai and Yang were currently at the store so they were alone. But Summer didn't come up the road, the postman did, with a saddened look across his face.

Ruby ran to the door when the postman came close. "Do we have any letters?" She questioned.

"Yes, but is your dad home?" He asked.

"Not right now but he'll be home soon."

"Well, here," he said sadly, giving her the letter, "I'm so sorry for your loss." He left saddened and prayed that they would be alright.

Ruby closed the door and ran to the couch where her twin sat, waiting. She opened the letter and they read it together.

Dear Xiao long/ Rose residents

We regret to inform you that Summer Rose has been put as KIA, we are sorry for your loss and wish the best of luck in the long run. Her remains were not located, but the amount of blood left at the site places her as KIA.

The two's eyes widened when they read the news, Ruby began to cry while Y/N was too stunned to cry, let alone move. Ruby hugged her twin and cried into his shoulder. He began to cry too, even more than Ruby, who had cried herself to sleep. After what seemed like hours, Yang and Tai walked into the house.

Yang POV

We had finally come home from the store, dad was sad after a phone call from Uncle Qrow came in, so when we did get home he went upstairs.

I noticed my brother and sister on the couch, Ruby was asleep while Y/N was crying.

"What's wrong?" I said.

"Didn't dad tell you?" He said, handing me a letter.

After I finished I couldn't believe it, Summer was gone. Was that why dad was so upset?

I grabbed my little brother by the shirt, "It isn't true! It can't be!" I yelled, I holding him up by his collar, "she can't be gone!" I threw him, angered by what I read, and I heard him slam into a wall.

After I realized what I had done, looked to see him, crying not just tears of sadness, but of fear as well. "Y/N!" I ran to him and hugged him, "I'm so sorry, I don't know why I did that." He continued to cry into my shoulder, when we heard something hit the ground.

I looked to see a picture, one of my mom, Raven, me and dad, outside a house. That's when an idea struck.

"You can't be thinking of going back there," Y/N said, "dad said-"

"It's too dangerous, I know," I said, "but there has to be a clue there."

Y/N looked at me worried. "I want you guys to come too."

"Are you sure? We aren't allowed there anymore." He said, it seemed like he was pleading.

"Please, you know how important this is for me." I said, also pleading, I needed to know what happened to her, or why she left.
