Katara (Avatar: The Last Airbender) x Reader

You propped your feet on to your bags, trying to ignore the bickering bouncing between Katara and Toph. Geez, do they ever shut up. You squeezed your eyes closed, humming to try and tune them out. It seemed to work pretty well, until a shoe wacked you in the face. You sat up, glaring at a Toph, who whistled to herself, and to Katara, who was already throwing apology after apology.

"I threw it at Toph, she tried to throw it back at me but well-" She stopped herself short, giggling softly. "I am so sorry for disturbing your sleep."

"Let her get her beauty sleep guys, she needs it." Sokka winced slightly, and you scoffed, tossing the water nation boot at his face. He screeched, waving his arms to try and shield himself, which only caused the shoe to go over the edge of the flying bison... just a few hundred feet in the air.

"I'll get it!" Aang jumped up, leaping off of Appa with his glider before anyone could protest.

Katara sighed, shaking her head, with you and Sokka in a bit of laughter next to her. "I deserved that."

"What happened?" Toph chirped.

Appa slumped next to a tree, groaning happily as Aang threw a stack of food in front of him.

"We need to restock in the village. (Y/n), would you like to come with me?" Katara beamed, brushing her dark hair from her face.

Katara, Sokka, and you had been best friends your entire life. Being the only two waterbenders in the southern tribe allowed you both to get even closer, but you never expected to fall in love with her. You wish you had realized it sooner, and not after seeing how heads over heels the short little airbender was. Don't get it wrong, you loved Aang. But you knew anyone would choose the Avatar over some normal...you.

You blushed softly, "Yeah, of course-"

"I'll come with you, Katara!" Aang jumped over you, quickly grabbing the bag Katara had in her hands to hold. "I'll get this, don't you even worry about it!"

Katara opened her mouth to protest, but you sent her a smile, shaking your head and brushing it off. She sighed before placing on a smile and allowing Aang to pull her into town.

"You need to put on your big boy pants and confess, bro." Sokka clicked his tongue, stretching his limbs.

You rolled your eyes, "Easy for you to say, Boomerang."

Sokka shrugged, accepting the name. "Yeah, but Toph's on my side, right?"

"Am I ever on your side?" She snorted, but after a second of silence, nodded, "No, sorry (Y/n), he's right."

"BIG. BOY. PANTS." Sokka began, soon being joined by the earthbender, "BIG. BOY. PANTS."

You groaned, falling onto your back, "You guys act like it's easy."

"It is." Toph and Sokka said in unison. You scoffed, ignoring them. Sokka coughed, "Look, (Y/n). I know my sister. I would have told you about the way she looks at you if you had told me about the way you look at her."

You glared at him for a moment, "Yeah, well, Aang's here now. I don't stand a chance."

Toph burst into a laugh, "She is so fruity, dude."

This caused a laugh to erupt from your chest. You let out a sigh, drumming your fingers against the grass. "Yeah okay... I-If I ask her to go watch the sunset with me, you guys have to keep Aang away."

"Deal, I'll tell him I see a tree on fire in the distance and then we can pretend like we don't know where y'all went when he returns." Toph said triumphantly, you and Sokka both sending her an impressed look.

You all sat around a small fire, Katara stirring a pot of rice every so often. Your eyes shifted between her and the soon-to-set sun, anticipating your next move.

"Oh, is that a fire!" Toph yelled, causing you to facepalm.

"What? Where?" Aang stood up, looking around, "How can you even tell?"

"Uh... I smell it." Toph nodded, "I-"

"Look! I see it too!" Sokka jumped onto a log, pointing in a random direction, "Wow, Aang, go check it out!"

Katara slowly stood, "I don't see anything..."

"It's massive! How can't you?" Sokka shook his head, "Some Avatar. You totally should check it out, though."

Katara sent you a perplexed look, and you shrugged slowly, "Be safe, man." You raised a cup to him, holding eye contact with Katara as he flew off with a groan.

"Wanna... go watch the sunset while we wait?" You grinned, picking at the cuticles on the sides of your nails before brushing your hands out on your skirt.

Katara looked slightly taken aback, before she chuckled, "That would be great."

As you both stood, you rolled your eyes at the thumbs up Sokka and Toph sent you. The trek up the hill was silent, but you lead her to a small clearing with a few logs. The cliff dropped off, giving an open view to the town and forest beneath you, as well as the falling sun. You both took in a seat, exchanging smiles before taking in the sight in front of you. You felt as if your entire body was shaking. Why am I so nervous? I've known Katara my entire life. Get yourself in check, (Y/n).

"There wasn't really a fire, was there?"

Oh.

You froze, eyes still watching the colorful sky. You itched your nose, trying to come up with a a good lie before sighing. "Yeah, uh-no there wasn't."

Katara giggled, folding her legs to her chest and resting her hands on knees, "It's weird having someone constantly trying to get my attention. Aang is very sweet but it can be...exhausting." You hummed, taking in her every feature as she smiled at the sun. "I love him and Toph, but I sometimes do miss when it was just Sokka, you and I." Katara finally looked at you, a small blush on her face, "I miss when it was just you and I."

Your eyes sprung open, and your breath hitched. "What?"

Katara grinned, changing her position so that she faced you, and you mimicked her move. She put both hands on your knees, drumming a rhythm. "I like you, too, (Y/n)." There's no way. "A lot, actually."

Before you could respond you had one hand on either side of her face, tugging her into you. Your breathes fanned against each other's lips and you felt a smile tug onto your lips. "Is this a bad time to say I actually don't like-"

"-Oh, shut up." Katara closed the space between you, pressing her lips to yours. You felt as if your entire body was exploding with joy as you wrapped your arms around her and she around you.

"Katara! (Y/n)!"

You slowly pulled away, huffing slightly as you tried to steady your breathing. You put your forehead to hers, beaming. "Wow."

Katara ran a hand through your hair, softly scrapping your scalp before nodding, "We should-we should head back before he thinks something bad happened to us."

"What's our cover story?" You mused.

She hesitatingly stood, reaching for your hand to help you up. She gazed at the sun, smirking, "We went to watch the sunset."
