I check my timetable to see that I have PE next. I start walking to the gym, when I see Brenda talking with her friends at the end of the corridor.

I decide to go over to her.

"Hey Brenda." I greet, making her turn her head on my direction.

"Hey Thomas." She says back, flashing a forced grin before returning her attention to her friends again.

I sigh, placing a hand on her shoulder.

"Can we talk, please?" I ask, dropping my hand as she looks at me and nods, and we walk to a quiet place, but still in the hallway.

I take a deep breath, trying to find the right words to tell her what's been running inside my head for some weeks now.

"Look, Brenda... I just need you to understand the reason why I'm doing this, okay? You're a beautiful girl, and I know you'll find the real one for you soon." I start, looking down at her.

"What are you trying to say, Thomas?" Her voice is incredibly low, and I can see something on her eyes. Something I've never seen before.

"Brenda, I think we should... I think we should break up." I finally say, lowering my head. I know it sounds awful, but I don't have the courage to look at her right now. "I'm sorry."

"Thomas, honey, you're kidding, right?" She asks, clasping my face with her hands to make me look at her.

I take her hands away gently from my face.

"I'm not. I'm sorry. But I just hope we can continue to be frien-"

"Who is she?" She interrupts, her voice getting angrier and her expression turning cold and hard.

"Brenda, there's no one. I just-"

"Who is she!?" Her voice rises, and the few people around us start looking at us weirdly.

"I've told you, there's no her. Just please understand why I'm doing this. It's better for both of us." I whisper, my attempt to calm her down. Brenda getting mad in the middle of the hall is something I definitely don't want to witness.

"You know what? Fine! I was going to break up with you sooner or later anyway."

And then she just walks away furiously towards her friends, leaving me behind in the hallway.

It shouldn't have hurted, but it did.

But I also think it could've been worse.

Even if I stopped feeling anything more than friendship towards Brenda, I can't help but feel a bit sad. We were together for a few months after all, and I felt happy with her, until she started to ignore me whenever we were alone or less people were in the room.

I take some seconds to gather my feelings and I decide that I can't feel sad. It was the right thing to do, I guess.

I turn the corner of the corridor, heading to my PE class. I still have five minutes left until the bell rings, but I don't really want to repeat the morning events, so I'm already walking there.

I reach another corridor and I see the new girl, who I think is called Teresa, looking around confused.

She probably thinks I'm an idiot now, but still I don't hesitate on walking over to her.

"Um... Hey? Teresa, right?" I greet, stopping in front of her.

She looks around for some moments when she looks up and locks eyes with me.

"Yeah um... Hi! You're Thomas, aren't you?" She smiles softly, crossing her arms around her books.

I nod my head, smiling as well.

"Are you lost? Do you need any help?"

"Actually, yes. I don't know where the gym is and I don't have much time before the bell rings." She says a little bit nervous, her eyes flickering around the corridor.

"It's okay. I'll take you there."

She softly nods, lowering her head. I can't help but smile at her shyness. I think we'll be good friends someday.

Well, I hope so.

We start walking to the gym, which doesn't take too much time, since we were close to it, and we arrive at the exact same time the bell rings.

We come to a stop near our class, and I immediately spot Newt and Minho probably talking, with Minho waving his hand at me.

"Thank you, Thomas. A lot." She smiles, turning around to face me.

"Anytime. If you need any help just ask." I offer, making her nod subtly then walking towards our class.

"Woah! Looks like you've made a new friend over there, Tommy!" Minho exclaims as we enter our changing room.

I hear Newt mumbling something under his breath, probably saying that only him can call me Tommy.

"She didn't know where the gym was so I, being the kind guy I am, helped her find her way here." I reply as if it was the obvious thing in the world, which is.

"Of course shank."

Fortunately, PE is my favourite subject, because I don't know what's going on with these guys today, and I have to get my head off of Brenda as soon as possible.
