Chapter Fourteen

I'm currently helping my little brother with his homework while our mom is buying groceries, and I can't help but feel a bit jealous of how simple maths is when you're in the 7th grade.

"See, Chuck, if you want to calculate the hypotenuse of this triangle," I point to the book in front of us, "you have to use the Pythagoras' Theorem, in which the square of the length of the hypotenuse of a right triangle equals the sum of the squares of the lengths of the other two sides." I continue as he does some exercises.

To be honest, I don't mind at all helping Chuck, it's one of the few things where we don't end up fighting at the end. Of course, brotherly fights, since he's as important in my life as my mom the same way I'm his.

We study for another hour until our mom arrives and we decide to have a little "family" time, since it's Saturday and we have the day free of classes and job, of course.

Since it's getting close to Christmas, we decide to start our family time with shopping. Even though I don't really appreciate buying clothes and that kind of stuff, I can't deny the fact that I like Christmas a lot.

We stop at a cafeteria so our mom can drink some coffee, and me and Chuck sneak into the chocolate shop, obviously.

"I wish I could buy everything in here." I ruffle Chuck's hair as I give out a chuckle, watching as Chuck's eyes sparkle with admiration.

"Fast, what do you wanna buy? Mom's almost finished." I rush him, guiding him to the chocolate shelf.

He looks up and down, until he makes up his mind with a big smile.

"Dark chocolate." He says proudly.

"I don't even know why I ask." He always choses dark chocolate.

I pay for the two pieces of chocolate (also for me, of course) and we meet our mom once again.

We buy everything we need, and soon the day is setting and we head home.

"Mom?" I lift my head to see Chuck sitting on the other side if the couch, not paying much attention to the TV, me texting Newt, Minho and Teresa on our group chat.

"Yes, sweetie?" I keep my eyes on Chuck. He's cross legged, his eyes staring at the ground. Something is bothering him and I can feel it, and I'm sure mom can feel it too.

He takes a deep breath, playing with his fingers for a bit.

"Do you think... do you think Dad is still watching us?"

My breath itches on my throat, the mention of our dad making me feel different kinds of emotions and my mind to travel to memories I don't usually like to dive into. Specially with my mom. I usually talk to Newt or Minho when I need to, now Teresa since we're close friends as well, as they know the whole story.

But this is Chuck we're talking about, and I do understand him.

Mom smiles sadly, nodding her head. "I'm sure, Chuck. He'll be always by your side. And he loved you. You two were his most precious things even if... sometimes he didn't show it." My mom answers, herself fighting back tears.

In the other hand, I don't feel anything, for now. Maybe in a few moments when I go to bed, it will all come again and all, but for now I'm just listening.

"Are you still mad at him?" Chuck asks again, and I see a little weight being lift up from his shoulders, as if this has been bugging him so badly it would make him feel stressed about.

Our mom nods in response, holding her gaze to the floor.

"I think I'll never forgive him for what he did to both of you."

"And you." I interject, only realizing now that my fists have closed, my phone laying on my lap.

She turns her head to me, pressing her lips together and closing her eyes.

"But yes, Chuck. Your good Dad is always looking down at both of you, I'm sure."

She takes us both into an all too familiar hug, the one you always find comfort in, and she let's us rest our heads on her lap, caressing our hair as she looks down at us with a soft smile on her face.

"And Chuck, just talk if you need to. Everyone needs to speak sometimes. If there's something that's been keeping you uneasy, just tell me or Thomas. We are always here for each other." Mom says, and I smile at how she always finds a way to comfort us.

I feel Chuck nodding his head in the opposite side of me.

"My two favorite boys." I hear mom whisper as I close my eyes, letting myself fall asleep as I find comfort on my mom's embrace.

A/N

Sorry this is kinda important to the story, so I really had to write it.

Also because I felt there wasn't that many moments with this adorable family 😊

Next chapter will be out soon!

Thank you! ❤
