I can't

Hinihilot ko ang sintido ko nang biglang may kumatok sa opisina ko. "Come in." I said. Dahang dahang bumukas ang pintuan at tumambad sa akin si Ms. Leila na may hawak hawak na mga papeles sa kamay. "Fifteen minutes na lang po, magsisimula na ang meeting niyo with the department heads." Malumanay niyang sabi sa akin. Tumango ako at tumayo na pagkatapos ayusin ang mga papeles na binabasa ko. Tumango ako sa kaniya at lumabas na kami ng opisina. I was looking around, trying to familiarise as she guided me to the conference room.

Pagkabukas niya ng pintuan ay tumambad sa akin ang iba't ibang department heads kasama ang iilang staffs. "Good afternoon, miss Alcantara!" They greeted me. I smiled as I greeted back to them. "Good afternoon." Nang makaupo sa swivel chair na nasa harapan nilang lahat, inilibot ko ang paningin ko. I think there are at least twenty people in here. Iba't ibang mukha ngunit lahat sila'y nakangiti sa akin.

Napatingin ako sa lalaking tumayo. He smiled at me as he speak. "Good afternoon, ma'am. I'm Edison Kyle Santos po and I'm the head of engineering department. And this is Claire, Ethan..." He continued to present their team. Habang ako'y tumatango lang at kinikilala ang nga mukha nila. Ang iilang mga mukha ay natatandaan ko ngunit sa dami ng lahat ng nagpakilala ay hindi ko na halos maalala ang iba.

"It's nice to meet you all. I hope that we'll work as a good company. I can't wait to work with you all." I said as I finished the meeting. Nagtayuan na sila at ang iilan ay nakipagkamay pa sa akin. Pagkatapos non ay bumalik na ako sa aking opisina. I watched the busy streets as I sat at my swivel chair. I just stared at the streets until it's getting dark.

I asked my secretary for a cup of water. And she immediately give it to me. I was sipping in my cold water when my phone rang for a text. I checked it and surprised to see that it was Adam.

Adam:
I can't.

What? He can't? What did he meant by this? I just shrugged that and checked the time. Pasado alas sais na and I think I can go home now. I'll just get a drive-thru in any fast food restaurants.

I was walking to my car when somebody grab my wrist. I turned to who that is and surprised that it's Adam. Anong ginagawa niya rito? Hindi ba't kanina ko pa siya pinaalis?

"I can't, Samantha." He said, staring in my eyes. Kumunot ang noo ko at nagsalita, "Anong 'you can't'?" I asked him. He breathed in before speaking, "I can't leave you." He said. "Why are you pushing me away? Hindi ba't kakabalik ko lang—" I didn't let him finish his sentence, "Bakit kita tinutulak palayo? Maybe because I have a boyfriend and you're my ex?" I said to him. His eyes shifted from me to the ground. "I don't mean anything bad. I won't ruin your relationship with... Leo." He said as he stared at me again with those familiar eyes. That eyes I used to love. That eyes that I fell inlove with. Umiling ako. No, no, no! Not again, Samantha!

"But I can't stay away from you. Damn! I can't even forget you, paano ako lalayo?" Now, he looked so frustrated. His eyes is turning soft as he stared at my eyes. "I wanted to hold you again. I wanted to talk to you everyday. I want to... I want to be with you again. Kaya sabihin mo, paano ako lalayo? Ni makalimutan ka, hindi ko kaya, paano pa ang paglayo sayo?" His breathing became heavy. "Answer me, please. Because I'm too tired of questioning myself how."

Now, I felt frustrated too. Bakit niya biglang binubuksan ang topic na ito? What is his plan? To make me fall again to his trap and break myself? Hell no.

"Paano ka lalayo? Hindi ba't matagal mo na akong kinalimutan? Hindi ba't matagal mo na akong iniwan? Noong mga panahong hindi ko naman hiniling yon? Ngayong hinihiling ko, hindi mo kaya?" Tumawa ako. "Stop fooling me, Adam. Oo, naging tanga ako sayo but I'll never let myself be a fool for you again." May diing sabi ko. He gulped as if he was out of words. "Pero kakabalik ko lang, kahit ba pagkakaibigan ay hindi pwede?" Tanong niya matapos ang ilang segundong pananahimik.
