"Lenny", I said.
"What made you want to be a hitman?" I leaned against the back of the passenger seat.
"You'd think i'd answer that for you?"
I watched him from the floor with wide eyes.
"Well i've always been interested in this kind of thing. It's like.. second nature and well a hitman seems a little better than a serial killer." He took his left hand off the steering wheel. "You know?"
"Yeah but what gave you the idea?"
He thought for a moment.
"A good friend of mine left and ended up getting me fired from my job. This was just a side thing at the time..."
Present
Thirteen hours already?, I thought when I saw the cars dash.
Home was just about 2 hours away.
I leaned back in my seat and into my so called "sleeping position" and watched him.
Something about this just didn't seem right.
Why now out of all the times?
Aren't I in danger ?
Why now out of all the times?
People are following us.
Lenny looked focus, which was odd.
He wouldn't look down at his steering wheel when turning on his turn signal and while a pedestrian crossed the road he stopped surely. Not watching the pedestrian but instead daydreaming about something.
Maybe he was always like this, I thought. I, myself when driving always second guessed but he seemed so sure about everything he did that he didn't review them.
It wasn't until we were 30 minutes away that the cold reality started hitting me. Then 20 minutes, 10, 9, 5 and 2.
We passed by the lone gas station and I started getting flashbacks of when this journey started.
Lenny pulled into the end of the cul-de -sac and I watched the headlights glare on the side of my neighbors fence. We stopped.
"So you're just gonna' leave me like this?" I spoke, pausing.
"We both started alone and this inevitably is how it will end?", I continued.
"Go do your own shit now.", Lenny replied.
I opened the door and stood out, with my oversized shoes and sweatpants.
"Lenny, I won't forget your fucking face.. And for a hitman it seems that no one does that." I went silent for a few moments.
"You'll probably always be in my memory and I hate you for that." Tears came to my eyes when I shut the door and started my way up to the house.
I heard the cars tires and I knew that it was best to end things right there before I opened the front door.
The End.
