Never Just Assume

Chapter 3

Instead of listening to the teacher go over the syllabus and the requirements of this class, I kept making jokes and Courtney would quietly giggle. Once the bell rings, we get our things and leave. "What's your last class of the day" Courtney asks. "P.E." I answer. "I also have that class" Courtney says, "If you want I can show where to go." I motion with my hand for her to walk, "Show me the way." Courtney giggles and starts walking. I follow Courtney.

As we walk to the gym all I can think about is Courtney. She is absolutely stunning, gorgeous, and beautiful. I love when I make her blush. I like when I can make her giggles, but I love it when I can make her laugh. My eyes go wide. Oh my god, I have a crush on Courtney. This is not good. I will be leaving in a matter of months, not only will I crush my heart but possibly crush Courtney's heart. I can't do that to her. I have to distance myself from her.

When we reach the gym, Courtney grabs my arm. I stop and look at her. "Are you busy after school" Courtney asks. "No" I say, "Why?" "You want to hang out after school" Courtney asks, "I really enjoyed your company in chemistry and would like to get to know you better." I say, "I-" "Valentine" I hear someone say. I turn around and see Nick and one of his friends walking towards us. I hear Courtney groan. "Sup man" Nick's friend says. I nod my head at him. "Uh h-he-ey Court-n-ney" Nick says.

I try not to laugh at Nick making a fool of himself. "Hey" Courtney says slightly annoyed. Zari and Destiny walk over. "Thing one" Destiny says, "Thing two." "The princesses have decided to grace us with their presence" Nick's friend says. "Shut up thing one" Zari says. "And who is this" Destiny asks checking me out. "This is Valentine Reid" Courtney says. Before anything else can be said the coach blows his whistle. "This is your only warning, get changed" the coach says. Courtney, Destiny, Zari, Nick and, Nick's friend walk into the locker rooms to change.

I walk up to the coach. "I'm Valentine Reid and I'm new here" I say. "I'm coach Nelson, you can call me coach or coach Nelson" coach says, "Now let's go get you the uniform." I follow him to his office. Once I get the uniform I walk into the boy's locker room. I change quickly and put my things in an empty locker. "Since it is the first day" coach says, "Today will be a free period." All the girls go sit on the bleachers and begin to talk. One of the guys gets a basketball.

"This is your sport" Nick's friend says, "Time to impress your future girlfriend." Nick and the guy that got the ball were captains and started picking teams. I got picked last and Nick's team is my opponent. We get into positions and the game starts. Nick gets the ball and started dribbling to his side of the court. He went to pass it to his friend, but I end up stealing the ball and ran to my basket. I faked going to my left and Nick falls for it. I ran to my right and make a layup. "He just got lucky" Nick's friend said.

That's pretty much how the whole game went. I kept one upping Nick and scored probably ninety percent of my teams point. It was a blow out. The final score was 45-5. My team high fived me as we walked to the locker room. I quickly changed in a secluded corner and then walked out. The bell was going to ring in couple of minutes. "Wow your really good" Courtney says. "Thanks" I reply. "Do you play basketball a lot" Courtney asks. "That and football" I answer. "You never answered my question from earlier" Courtney says.

"What question" I ask. "If you wanted to hangout after school" Courtney says. I go to answer, but Nick and his friend appear behind me. "Can we tag along" Nick's friend asks, "Since you know Valentine is our friend also and we would like to get to know him better." Ugh Nick and his friend are so annoying; can't they take a hint and see I want nothing to do with them. I see that Courtney is also looking annoyed, she must be thinking along the same lines as me. "I mean I guess if its ok with Valentine" Courtney says. Well it's too late to back out now, thanks a lot Nick. "Well I mean I guess I don't care if they tag along" I say, "You were the one that invited me to hang out with you." Courtney sighs and says, "I guess..."

I see Nick with the goofiest grin on his face. I roll my eyes. I know I have only known him for like two days, but he is really annoying. The bell rings and everyone begins to leave. "Meet you in the front" Courtney asks. "Sure" I reply. I walk to my locker and put everything I need in my backpack and put everything I don't need in my locker. I close my locker and walk to the front of the school. I don't see anyone else. I quickly text my dad letting him know that I am hanging out with friends. I see Nick and his friend from P.E. walk out and over to me. "I never properly introduced myself" Nick's friend says, "I'm Leo." Nick's other two friends walk over. "That's Zeke" Leo says pointing to the one on the left, "And that's Ricky." He points to the other guy.

I see Courtney, Zari and Destiny walk over. "Ladies" Leo says. "Thing one" Zari says. "So where are we going" Ricky asks. We all look at each other. "I'm hungry" Zari says. "Pizza" Zeke asks after a few seconds. Everyone agrees and then it takes five minutes for them to decide where to eat. They finally decide on a place and we all walk to our cars. I am following Nick since I don't know where this place is. Ten minutes later we arrive at the place. I park my car and get out. We all meet in the front and then walk in.
