Never Just Assume

Chapter 19

Before I knew it, my dad was leaving in two days. Over the last week and five days, I had been spending all my free time with my dad and had been ignoring my friends and Courtney. I hung out with them at school and then hung out with my dad once school ended til I went to bed. I had promised to make it up to them after my dad left, but I could tell that my girlfriend was getting a little annoyed since I had barley spent any time with her since Halloween.

I wake up that morning to my phone buzzing. I reach out grabbing my phone and answering it without looking to see who is calling. "Whoever is calling better have a damn good reason for waking me up" I say annoyed. "Well good morning to you too babe" Courtney says giggling. A smile immediately takes over my face, "Morning Court, what's up?" "It's about my damn good reason for waking you up" Courtney says. I chuckle and ask, "Well what was your damn good reason?" "I was wondering if you were free today" Courtney says, "I wanted to hang out with you."

"Sorry babe, but I-" I say, but stop when a thought crosses my mind, "One second." I walk downstairs and see my dad drinking coffee, "Hey bud." "Do you mind if my friends tag along" I ask. "Sure" my dad says. I walk back upstairs and grab my phone. "How would you like to join me and my dad paintballing" I ask. "Are Destiny and Zari invited" Courtney asks. "Of course" I reply, "I'm also going to invite the guys." "Ricky and Zeke I understand" Courtney says, "But why the hell would you invite Leo and Nick?"

"One word" I say, "Revenge." "By shooting them" Courtney asks. "Exactly" I reply, "And you will also be able to make Nick pay for all the half assed apologizes and everything else he has done to you over the years." "I'm in" Courtney says. "Cool" I say, "I'll pick you up in a few hours." "Can't wait" Courtney says. After I hang up, I get dressed and walk down stairs. While I get breakfast, I text everyone to see if they want to join us. "Courtney's in and I just everyone else" I say. My dad nods and continues to do whatever he is doing on his laptop.

A few hours later, we drive to Courtney's house. My dad parks and I go knock on the door. The door opens and Courtney takes me by surprise and kisses me. I kiss her back once I recover from being caught off guard. After a few seconds of kissing, I pull apart and lean our foreheads together. "Hello to you too" I say smiling. Courtney giggles and says, "Hey." "Hey" I say. "I missed you" Courtney says. "I know and I'm sorry" I say, "I promise, I will make it up to you after my dad leaves." "I get it Val, you don't have to apologize" Courtney says. I smile and kiss her. Courtney smiles into the kiss.

"Ya ya we get it" Zari says, "You two miss each other even though you see each other every day." "Oh Zari" I say, "You and your comments is something I didn't miss." Zari puts her hand over her heart and feigns being hurt, "That hurts Valentine." I smile while Courtney and Destiny laugh. "Let's go" I say walking over to the car. We meet Nick, Leo, Ricky, Zeke, and Joe at the paintball field and divide into two teams. Team one consists of me, my dad, Courtney, Zari, and Ricky. Team two consist of Nick, Joe, Leo, Zeke, and Destiny.

The two teams go to their side of the field and wait for the air horn to signify the start of the game. We hear the air horn and start walking towards the center of the field to meet the other team. Me and Courtney go left while my dad, Ricky, and Zari go right. Me and Courtney walk into a tower and head to the top. I look out and see the other team opening fire on my dad, Ricky, and Zari. "Try to hit someone" I say to Courtney taking aim at Joe seeing as he is the biggest threat.

Courtney takes aim and I say, "Now." Courtney starts firing in their direction while I take out Joe, Nick, and Leo. Zeke and Zari take cover while the rest of my team makes their way over to them. Leo and Joe start to walk off the field while Nick looks at me and flips me off. I smile back. The rest of the game consist of Leo and Nick trying to hit me and failing while I continue to hit them. Courtney manages to hit each of them with my help.

When the game ends, me and Courtney are the only ones who didn't get hit. We are all putting the equipment away, when I get shot in the worst possible place. I drop to the ground holding my crotch groaning in pain. "Shit, sorry man" Nick says, "My finger slipped." I glare at Nick and grit out, "Accidents happen." I flip Nick off when no one is looking and Nick smirks. "Here Valentine" Ricky says handing me a bag of ice. Ricky and my dad help me stand up and sit in a chair. I put the ice on my crotch and groan.

Once everything is put away, we go to a nearby restraint for lunch. After lunch, we drop the girls off at Courtney's house and head home. Me and my dad spend the rest of the day watching movies. The next day hang out at the house until he has to leave. When its time for him to leave, he changes into his uniform and grabs his bag. I follow him to his car. He puts his bag in the car. He turns around and pull me into a hug. I hug him back. "I'll call as often as I can and I'll write you" he says, "And I'll try to be home for Christmas." "Ok" I say, "I'm gonna miss you."

"I'm gonna miss you too bud" he says, "Don't get into too much trouble and keep those grades up. And your aunt will be here in two days." "I promise" I say. "Also" he says, "Figure out how you are going to tell Courtney you're a girl, the longer you wait the worse its going to be when you finally tell her." "I know and I will" I say. "Bye Val" my dad says pulling away and climbing into the car. "Bye dad" I say. My dad starts the car and backs out of the drive way. I salute him when he looks at me. He smiles and salutes me back. He drives off and I sigh. "Bye dad..." I say, "Come home safely."
