Rochata Milagro

Raven appeared to be very sad, and I couldn’t resist the urge to reach out and hug her. I knew it made her feel better, and I felt like I finally belonged somewhere. I never knew my parents. They dropped me off here and never came back for me. My powers must have been a shock for the couple who raised me. At least they were generous enough to raise me to until I was eighteen.

“Don’t feel bad! I mean if I was in your position I would feel threatened too!” I said in the best reassuring voice I could.

Her gaze didn’t shift at all. Sadness still filled her eyes. I held up my arms, turned around for her, and jumped up and down to try and prove I was fine.

“See? I’m okay.” I said again.

“No you’re not! You’re bleeding!” She said as I could feel myself collapse. The pain must have escaped my mind, since I didn’t notice anything was wrong until I felt light headed. What felt like an eternity later, my eyes shot back open. Raven must have used her magic to heal me. She was looking down at me, her hands were over my leg.

“You should be fine now.” She said calmly.

Now I felt bad for putting her through that. She was already sad about attacking me out of the blue, and now she found out she hurt me pretty good at the same time. I put her through a lot of pain even though I like her.

            “Thank you…” I said slowly.

“Now who’s disappointed?” She smiled weakly.

That’s one thing I loved about her. The most horrible things could come and kick her in the face, but she always found a reason to smile, always pushed forward. I smiled up at her as she helped me back up.

“Let’s get you home” I smiled offering her my hand.

Raven took my hand with a big smile on her face. We walked together back to her house, where Ed and her brothers lived. Ed was sitting out on the patio when we emerged from the woods, and he studied us as we approached him. He knew something was up, and looked to be planning his next words carefully. A few feet away from him Raven turned toward me and embraced me.

            “Thank you.” she whispered softly.

She turned and ran into the house and up the stairs. I’m guessing she headed straight toward her room. I smiled to myself and turned back to head out into the woods again. My foster parents had kicked me out when I turned eighteen. They didn’t want to deal with a magical freak anymore. One of the few in this town that don’t accept us.

“Rochata?” I heard Ed’s voice cut in.

“Yes?” I replied, studying his face carefully.

“Would you like to stay with us? Permanently I mean,” he asked me. I looked at him, trying to figure out his motive for a couple of seconds. His black eyes made me feel pressured into a decision.

“I don’t see why not, I mean living out in that forest doesn’t get a little boring after a while.” I smiled at him.

“Good, we’ll figure out arrangements eventually but for now you’ll stay on the couch. Is that okay?” He asked me.

“Well considering that I’m use to sleeping in a tree, a couch sounds heavenly,” I replied.
