"Is there a reason why bad things happen in the world? Why good things happen in the world?" a young girl asked her father as they walked down a dim lit street. The girl was around seven years old and had strawberry blonde hair, hazel eyes and glasses that framed her small face perfectly. Her father smiled down to her and ruffled her shoulder length hair, her bangs going behind her glasses and into her eyes.
The girls father had dark, shaggy hair and green eyes, not resembling the girl at all, "Well...Remi, there are monsters that help supernaturals and humans, and there are monsters that harm supernaturals and humans. Those that harm are mentioned in the news by the name of 'Sombers'. Humans know them as their own demons. We know them as our enemies. Those that help are called 'Lucents'. Humans know them as their angels. We know them as our friends or helpers," Remi's father explained. She listened intently as they continued to walk. He continued, "Sombers hide under children's beds and scare them at night. Lucents guard the children during the day from the Sombers. I'm sure you have some Sombers under your bed, but your Lucents keep them under control."
"I know I do, daddy. I can see them under my bed when I'm searching for something I lost. Do they take my things too, when I'm not home?" She asked. A pair of wolf ears appeared where her ears were, blending in with her hair and a wolf tail sprouted from her tail bone, matching the color of her ears. A small pair of wings came from her back and they were a pretty deep purple with golden swirls on each feather.
Her father chuckled lightly, "Those are called 'Trinket Takers'. Those are small creatures that hide in your sock drawer. They love socks for some reason. We are almost home, you will be going to bed as soon as we get there. Look at that pretty sunrise," he remarked and pointed to the sunrise off in the East.
"It's so pretty, papa. I wish I could go to day time school with other kids," Remi yawned.
"I know sweetheart, but humans are afraid of our species. Our features come out during the day, instead of the night. Some think of us as Sombers and some think of us as Lucents."
"So we're both?" Remi asked sleepily.
Her father nodded and picked her up, letting her sleep in his arms as they came to their two bedroom home. Remi was fast asleep and her father laid her down in her bed. He saw his wife in the kitchen, cleaning what was left for dishes. "Good morning, dear. I will be heading to work in just a few minutes. Take care of our little monster princess, while I am gone. She still has no idea, does she."
"She does not. But we still love her for the monster princess she is," he smiled, kissing his wife goodbye. He sat on the couch and watched his wife leave for work. He slowly fell asleep, exhausted from being awake for the night. Humans aren't nocturnal, but monsters are.
