Memories

Remi was thirteen and that was the first time she snuck out during the night. She went to the lakeshore close by, so she wasn't too far from home. That was the first time she met someone her age. His dark shaggy hair was always neatly pushed out from his brown eyes and his name rung in her ears the first time she heard it. "Shiloh, I've never heard that name before."

"It's not very common, but I like it. But Remi, that's very pretty," Shiloh commented with a shy smile. Remi pushed her hair passed her ears shyly, looking down at the sand that the two laid on. "So, why haven't I seen you at school?"

"I'm home schooled, by my parents," she replied, looking up at the stars. She slowly saw the sun rising and she sat up. "We've been out for a long time...I should probably get home, before my parents worry."

Shiloh sat up and looked at her, "I can walk you home, if you want," he offered. Remi shook her head and she could feel her tail slowly revealing itself.

"No, it's okay. I--I can walk myself home," she said as she gathered her shoes.

"Do you wanna meet here again, tonight?" Shiloh asked, hoping she'd say yes. Remi was nervous with answering, since her features were starting to show. She snuck away and she could feel her antlers coming out of her head and another tail coming from her tail bone. She felt her mouth grow larger and her teeth couldn't fit in her mouth. "Remi!"

She could hear Shiloh shouting after her, but she was already gone, down the block.

Present

Sixteen and Remi never left the house after she met Shiloh. Her heart ached and she felt terrible for ditching him, three years prior. She wasn't sure if he'd ever forgive her. "Mom..." She spoke softly as she walked into the kitchen.

"Yes sweetheart?" Her mother asked as she was putting dishes away. Her mother's hair was blonde and chest length, her eyes were brown and she had half moon glasses on.

"What is love?" She asked shyly. No, she hadn't seen Shiloh in three years, but she had thought about him ever since that day they met.

Her mother hesitated, "Love is when your mind just can't get off of someone. Or when you think of their name and your heart speeds up. What made you ask that, Remi?"

Remi was nervous with telling her about Shiloh, but she needed to tell someone, "So...I met a boy about three years ago...when I left the house on my own one night. I haven't been able to stop thinking about him, but I've only met him once. Once my features started to show, I ran away..." she spoke at her feet. She felt her mother lift her chin up so she could see her mother's face.

"Sweetheart, your father and I knew you snuck out and even met someone. He stopped by after you got home. He asked if you were home and your father told him that you were fast asleep. Shiloh told us that he wanted to see you again, but he wasn't sure if you were going to come back the next night. When you didn't, he came over again to see if you were alright," she paused. Remi just looked at her mother in shock.

"You kept this from me for three years?!" She growled. Remi could feel her face become warm and her hands were clenched. "Why would you keep that from me for three years, mom?!"

Her mother lowered her gaze, "Your father didn't want you having contact with humans. So he decided that we shouldn't tell you."

Remi growled and went to her room, waiting for her father's return from work.
