"honey, why don't you go get your little brother his new toy!" you smiled at your seven-year-old daughter as you got out the groceries.
it was a nice morning. you and the love of your life, your husband/wife woke up to your two kids jumping on top of you. you made them their favorite breakfast - dinosaur pancakes and orange juice and decided to go with your partner to get more groceries for the next week.
then in the middle of picking up the veggies, the news on tv of the grocery store flashed an emergency situation. a large alien spaceship had blown through new york city. you lived in washington, that wasn't too far off for the size of the ship. tony stark had gone missing. the avengers had broken up 3 years ago. this was a situation that you had dreaded the most.
ever since the incident in berlin, you had feared that the sokovia accords would backfire and when the world needed the avengers the most, the government would deny the need for them until it was too late. this was that moment, and you desperately needed the avengers- for the safety of your children, for the safety of your love.
when you got back home, your husband/wife stopped you before you exited the car.
"let's be calm. for the kids," s/he said. you nodded back, gulping down the growing fear that threatened to spill.
you had gotten toys for the kids, silently hoping it wouldn't be the last one you got them. your husband/wife called the oldest- kristen to help with the groceries while you got the heavier items out.
"[mom/dad]," said kristen, holding up the bag of milk, "aunt cameron called and said there was a spaceship in new york." cameron was your sister, she lived in jersey.
"did she say anything else?" you asked, straining your voice to cover the growing worry.
"no, just something about her dog going missing. the new one she got," kristen then left the conversation and immediately squealed at her new thor action figure.
"do you think thor still has his long hair," the little child asked, her brown hair like the color of your partner's was tied up into a messy ponytail. she had been learning to do her own hair this past week. she was progressing, sort of.
"hopefully. i liked his long hair," you smiled.
"david!" you called for your four-year-old son. he ran into the room wearing one of your shirts, it was clearly too big for him, you were afraid he would trip at the hem of it.
"david, [mom/dad] got you a dinosaur!" kristen squealed, holding up the toy box. david screamed with glee and jumped up and down. he ran to you and gave you his 'biggest' hug.
"i can make a dino-park!" he yelled, running off to his room. kristen followed him, shortly after getting her bottle of water.
"honey, we should get the other stuff," your partner held your hand, bringing you out of your trance of fear. s/he meant the stuff from the garage. the survival stuff.
the fall of the triskelions upon washington caused scars. so did the battle of new york and then sokovia. the government urged the public to stock up in case the world was faced with another out-of-world crisis.
"yeah, let's go," you said.
---
it was half past three when it happened.
you managed to get a hold of your sister, her apartment building was damaged but to a repairable extent. your parents down in wisconsin were okay. your in-laws in san francisco were safe too.
the entire day, you and your partner had begun getting an inventory of all of the items and getting the heavy-duty locks on. you had finally gotten a break and was resting by your wife/husband on the couch.
"[mom/dad]!" kristen screamed from her room.
you ran in first. kristen was crying and screaming. her thor toy was scattered to a side.
"where's david?" your partner asked, standing beside you.
kristen shakily lifted a finger, pointing to the baby blue closet. you cautiously walked over, and with a deep breath you opened the door.
there he was, your little boy david. his face was cracking but the tears streaming were full. he had curled himself into a ball, but it was obvious. his right arm was crumbling to ashes.
"oh my god," you cried. you took your son into your arms. he cried, "[mommy/daddy], what's happening- i- i don't know what's happening to me."
you cried along with him, telling him he was okay, that he was going to be fine. but you could see that the ash had taken his shoulder and his legs. you were holding onto barely anything.
"dad/mom!" kristen yelled. you looked up, thinking you were next, but it was even worse.
"baby," s/he said softly. you felt the weight in your arms lighten and an itch forming on your arms. you looked down, david wasn't there.
"david-"
you ran up to your partner, holding him/her by the face, "don't go, no, baby please- i'm scared."
"i know," s/he said smiling, "i'm scared too, but you're gonna be fine, okay? you'll be fine." his/her legs were ash and s/he fell on top of you. but that weight was gone the second it came.
you heard the ghost of three words.
realizing what this was, confused by it's cause, you turned to kristen.
there were ashes strewn across the floor and only one person in the room.

a/n. when the pronouns are within [ ] they relate to you, when it isn't it's for your partner. eg: mom/dad- is for your partner, [mom/dad] is for you. okay thanks bye this hurt.
also it's totally acceptable to write before an english exam. it's practice.
(technically i wrote this before the exam and published after but boo the details)
