Chapter 6
That stupid smirk would be the end of me. Well that or get me expelled for punching him. I gritted my teeth and looked back down at my books. Luca cleared his thought.
“Mr. Diable you’re late. Next time, don’t be.” Luca said curtly. “You guys have a three page essay on distance and the importance of staying covert due on Thursday. I hope you guys were paying attention.” The bell rings signaling that my math class starts in five minutes. I scooped up my books and rushed out of the class not even waiting for Trish or Katie. When I make it to the room without anyone chasing after me I collapsed in my seat. Mrs. Riley began her lecture on the tangent. I rushed to open my notebook so I wouldn’t miss anything. Time drug by and I found myself counting the minutes until the class would be over. The class was supposed to be starting our homework but I couldn’t concentrate. My mind kept replaying my dreams over and over again. What did they mean? To take my mine off everything I started to draw. My hand moved across the paper of its own accord. The bell rang breaking my trance. I looked down at the paper in horror. What had started out as a picture of a bridge had turned out to be a murder scene. A body lay face down in the water while a shady figure stood on the bridge with a gun in his left hand. I quickly crumbled to paper up.
I threw the paper into the trash can as I passed by the door. What’s wrong with me? I bumped into someone and my books flew out of my arms. Could this day get any worse? I bent down to gather my stuff when Jonathan grabbed my Trig book.
“What do you want?” I spat. I didn’t notice I was crying until a tear dropped onto my notebook.
“Destiny? Are you okay?” He reached to touch my cheek. I flinched away from his hand and a sad look flashed across his face.
“No I’m not okay. There’s something wrong with me and I don’t know what.” I tried to grab my book back from him but he wouldn’t let go.
“Let me take you somewhere. I swear it’ll make you feel better.” I know if I argue with him I’ll feel worse. I nod and accept his help up. He motions for me to hand him my books. I give them over without a second thought.
“Where are we going?” I asked quietly.
“I found this really cute ‘50’s dinner last week. I thought you might like it.” He smiled down at me.
When Jonathan really smiled you couldn’t help but smile back. We decided to walk considering the dinner was only two blocks away.
“What was your child hood like?” I ask without really thinking about it.
“I never knew my mom. She died giving birth to me. My father….well….. He’s not the nicest guy. I’ve taken care of myself ever since I can remember. It wasn’t that bad, my dad’s sister always wanted a boy. Enough about me. Why are you taking math and British litterateur? Those classes aren’t required.”
“This might sound strange but, taking extra classes kinda makes me feel like I’m back with my family, like I’m back on earth. Like I’m finally alive again. It gives me something to look forward to.” It scared me how open I was being with Jonathan. I wasn’t this open with people I’ve known for years then Jonathan waltzes into my life and I spew my guts to him after less than a week.
“That doesn’t sound strange at all. I’ve never told anyone this but, when I was little I went through this obsession with the power rangers. I ran around in a red power ranger costume for two weeks strait. My dad was pissed when he found out his sister had a loud it.” He flashed me his contagious smile.
“Looks like we’re here,” He pulled open the door. “after you.” I giggled and ducked under his arm. The black and white tile was faded and the juke box was playing the beach boys. Along one wall there was a bar where you could see into the kitchen.
“Hello! My name is Candice, and I’ll be your waitress today!” A bubbly elderly woman announced. She led us to a red corner booth. I slid into my seat right as Candice set our menus down.
“Would you like anything to drink?” She inquired.
“Coke please.” We say at the same time. I blush and quickly look down at the menu. Candice laughs and walks away to get the drinks.
“So power ranger, why here?”
“You’re never going to let me live that down now, are you?”
“Hell no! What kind of friend would I be if I did!” I joked kicking him under the table. He raised his eyebrow and nudged me back.
“Is that all you got?” I kicked him harder. Before I knew it we were in an all-out war.
“You guys are such a cute couple!” Candice exclaimed as she sat our drinks down.
“Oh, we’re not a couple.” I tried to explain.
“Uh huh.” She smiled at me.
“Can we have an order of fries and two cheese burgers?” Jonathan Interrupted. Candice hurried off without another word.
“Oh god! That was so embarrassing!” I gushed.
“It wasn’t too bad.” He answered with a half-smile. Once we finished our food, paid, and thanked Candice, we walked back to the University parking lot.
“Need a ride back to your dorm?”
“Nah, Trish gave me her car. Thanks though.” I smiled up at him before getting into Trish’s car. I can’t help but wave to him and I pull out of the parking space. The ride home was quick and silent.
When I walked into our house Trish looked up from her documentary on Great White sharks and stared and me like I’d grown two heads.
“You have that goofy smile thing going on Des. Did you see Jonathan?” She wiggled her eyebrows suggestively.
“I don’t have a goofy smile!” I protested. “And what if I did see Jonathan?” Trish let out a girlish scream and bounced up and down, her popcorn flying in every direction.
“I told Katie! She owes me forty bucks!”
“You bet on my love life!” I mocked horror.
“Isn’t that what best friends are for!” We laughed for what felt like forever. When we finally calmed down Trish made a new batch of popcorn, swearing on her soul that she’d clean up the old popcorn….eventually. We plopped down on the couch and continued the documentary.
“I want all the juicy details!” She squealed. “I can’t wait to rub it in Katie’s face!” What have I got myself into?
“Trish we aren’t dating! We’re just friends.” I tried to tell her, but she’d have none of it.
“We’ll just have to see what he thinks.” She smiled mischievously. Why do I have the feeling I’m going to regret making her my best friend?
“Can we just watch sharks kill things I peace?” I whined.
“Of Corse we can Des! Right after you spill the beans.”
Kill me…………………….
