Elle remembered when she was younger and she thought about who she'd be when she grew up. She always worried she wouldn't find love, or that she wouldn't be good enough for anyone, or that she'd accidentally get pregnant.
And she did find love. And it was bliss - everything she dreamed of and everything she ever wanted it to be - just not with the right person anymore.
And that's not what she expected. She'd worry that she'd settle down and get married and the person she loved suddenly wouldn't love her anymore, but now she was becoming that person, and she hated it.
Of course she loved him; she loved his eyes and his laugh, his beauty and his compassion for others. His determination to always do the best he could and this unconditional love he had for everything he touched like it was sacred. But she couldn't tell him that. Not anymore.
"What do you want me to say?"
"You know how I feel about - "
"No I don't know how you feel, Luke!"
Her loud voice echoed through the apartment as the keys slammed down on the countertop, breaking the once quiet discussion.
The blonde widened his eyes, taking a look at his girlfriend as she stood meters away like she was scared. She wasn't scared, no. She was repulsed.
The brunette sighed and averted her eyes wherever she could as they stung a little. Her hands were trying to find a place to sit and she shuffled on her feet; confrontation was never something Elle was good at.
"I don't know who you are anymore."
The voice crack sent an ache through Luke's chest as he sat still on the couch.
"And I don't know what you want me to do about it," a deep breathe resonated, "because I can't live like this anymore. No one lives like this."
"Like what?"
Her drowning eyes snapped to him in hurt as he sat looking at her blankly. His attitude matched the interior of their shared apartment; bland and emotionless.
There was no love there.
She stood in anger. The bar stool screeched. "I'm going out. I want you gone by the time I'm back."
Luke scrambled to get up off the sofa as she grabbed her coat and keys. "What?"
"I want you gone."
"This is my apartment!"
Elle whipped round in fury to face the tall man that had followed after her to the door.
"Don't you get it, Luke? I gave up everything for you! The second you asked me to! And because of you, I have nowhere else to go. I lost my friends, for you. I quit my job, for you. Everything I did, was for you!" Her hands slammed on his chest, pushing him backwards as he looked down at the girl helplessly.
"You don't get to pull that fucking card. I didn't make you do anything!"
She nearly screamed out of frustration. "I did it because I love you, Luke! That's what happens when you love someone that much. You asked me for forever, and I gave that to you,"
Elle stood back, wiping her wet eyes and straightening her jacket.
"I have nothing else to offer you. Don't you get that? And if that's not good enough for you, then I think you need to have a word with yourself, because I can't live like this any longer."
And with that, the door slammed shut.
