Virgil took a step back, a whimper stuck in his throat. He was not ready to face this. He almost always had an escape plan, but not this time - his mind wasn't responding.

Roman set his jaw firmly and took a step forward, putting an arm in front of Virgil.

Virgil sighed. If Roman's gonna be the brawn of their dynamic duo, he'd have to supply the brains. Thanks brain, for bailing out at this crucial moment. If he couldn't think, he might as well as observe. For a terrifying monster thing... it was pretty slow. Virgil didn't bother check if it's feet touched the ground at all, because his own feet were telling him to run in the opposite direction, like RIGHT NOW. But that would be back towards the lake... which was puking blue mist. Yeah, he was forced to believe Roman now. Duh. The world was going crazier than his fantasies of the apocalypse.

Okay, the lake is out. The building was locked. Neither could fly. Trust the crazy to not give them wings. Roman probably would be able to punch the monster but throw the dogs he'd be a gonner. UGHHHH. Can't he just spontaneously combust? That's the best option now. Virgil rubbed his temples with the heels of his hands.

Roman carefully judged his opponents pace. If the fellow didn't go any faster, it'd be on to them in five minutes tops. Should he go for offense or defence? He didn't know his enemy, so an attack was not the best option. He chose to wait. He knew he could throw a mean punch if there was any funny business... but that was not something he was proud of. He got too fond of punching if he let himself go. Keep it cool, he told himself. Either his fists didn't hear, or the situation was making him reckless, but suddenly the urge to fight surged through him. He forced it down and evened out his breath. There must be a more peaceful option... Maybe he could talk to it?

"Hey!" he cried, in a voice loud enough to be heard but not too loud to sound aggressive. "We mean no harm, strange being from the netherworld!"

The figure stopped. The two creatures continued to amble forward.

"Uh... Nice doggies!" stuttered Roman, lying through his teeth.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. The snap of jaws.

"Idiot," hissed Virgil.

"Got a better plan, V? V for Vendetta here is gonna drop us deader than dominos!"

Virgil shook his head desperately. "Run?"

"Where?"

"In opposite directions? Then only one of us dies."

"Seriously? After all we've been through? Plus, there are two dogs."

"Uh... Roman..."

Roman's sharp reflects switched to high gear as he grabbed Virgil and leapt aside to narrowly escape a bolt of blue energy beamed straight at them. Roman landed on bent knees and dropped Virgil safely behind him. He was tightly wound as a coil, ready to spring in to action. His breath was measured and his eyes watchful.

The figure lowered its arm, sizzling from shooting the bolt. It started moving forward again. Unfortunately, when Roman had jumped, he ended up going towards the figure. There were still backed up against the building, and the creatures were spreading out to trap them in.

"Need a plan, buddy," grunted Roman. "Which brute do I take down first?"

Virgil looked at the spot they had hurriedly vacated. The energy bolt hadn't destroyed the door or the wall... nice observation, but what the hell could he do with that useless fact? He suddenly remembered the alley way. That meant they had to run towards the monster before turning away.
