The classes at Scintilla are a drag.

We learn how to read sheet music. What the history of music has looked like. What the different music genres are. What instruments to use for such genres.

But on Fridays, we apparently have a practical day where we write music and participate in challenges that'll prove who gets to stay at Scintilla.

This is the first week of school and today, we choose what instruments we will use for the rest of our time here, and what our first challenge will be.

-----------------------------------------

I sit down in the front row of the auditorium as the rest of school also floods in to watch the 'new kids' choose their legacy.

The stage is covered by what seems to be computer stations and there are technicians dashing about crazily whilst Carly jiggles in her seat next to me nervously, her newly dyed pastel pink hair swishing about in bouncing waves as she chews on the end of a strand out of habit.

The headmaster then walks on to stage and performs some big speech about how these decisions will change the rest of our school year, affecting what it is that we will be learning in our classes and what not.

But I begin to grow nervous when us newbies get invited up on to stage and told to stand by our designated computer screens. Of course, I'm front and centre and slightly scared as I stare out at the crowd in front of us.

I scan the audience out of habit as Ms Ustamu instructs us on how to use the screens. First, we'll be selecting our instruments and from there, we get split into groups. In these groups, we get to choose our selected instrument from a pile that'll be brought out on to stage.

My eyes firstly land on his ratty blonde hair, as I spot Mikey sitting in the back row next to Ashton, Calum and Luke who all give me the thumbs up and an encouraging smile. I nod back slightly and look down at my screen as it illuminates with five pictures. A guitar, a microphone, a bass guitar, a set of drums, and a keyboard.

By instinct, I tap on the guitar and am pleased when my screen turns green and a projection of a guitar shoots out and it is put on display to the audience.

I look around nervously and find the other seventeen students have also chosen their instruments. Three guitarists, four bassists, three drummers, six vocalists and two pianists.

I smile at Carly who has stopped chewing on her hair in the back corner of the stage, and see that she has chosen to do piano. She smiles in return and gives me a small wave to which I also nod in return as Ms Ustamu walks back on stage and tells us to step away from our stations.

The computers sink into the floor and are enclosed beneath the stage as we are then pushed into corners by the stage technicians based upon the instruments we chose.

"Now dear audience, the students have chosen what instruments they want to specialise in. But what will their instrument look like? Vocalists, step forward." Ms Ustamu directs as the group of female singers, plus one male, step forward and line up across the middle of the stage.

A table then appears in front of the group from beneath the stage that is covered in a range of microphones, each one different from the last as we all watch the vocalists choose their desired mic.

After this group finishes, they return to their seat with their instrument and watch the rest of the groups go.

The bassists are next, followed by the pianists and the drummers. Obviously, they don't take their instruments with them, but we are notified that our instruments will be in our designated practice rooms which we will be introduced to after the service.
