And I did manage to pull them off. Walking down the staircase in my white flats and a matching white floral print shirt, I saw the first glimpse of what I was getting myself into tonight.
"Nice of you to join us. Take a seat" my father said as I pulled out a chair and plonked my bottom on it. It felt awkward since I was the only one sitting down so far, and I just kept my fingers crossed that everyone else would sit at the other end of the large enough table.
I was snapped out of my thoughts when the doorbell rang.
"Great, the guests must be here" i thought to myself.
"Useless girl" my stressed mother muttered as her heels clicked across the tiled floor as she trotted past me carrying cutlery in each hand. She must have meant me, oops.
"Can you please get that!" She whispered-yelled once she realised I wasn't moving. I gulped and pulled my chair out, then began walking to the front door.
"Hi- I uh, you must be our guests?" I recover myself as I see an all to familiar face standing with another bloke.
"Yes, thankyou Miss" the man replied making his way inside. My eyes met James' and I whisper-yelled.
"What are you doing here?"
He was dressed in black pumps and a pair of black ripped jeans. On his top half he wore a white button up shirt. The top two buttons lay open, showing off more of his neckline.
"My moms sick and my dad made me come to some posh business meeting or something? I don't even know!" He whispered. "I had no idea it was yours!"
"Me neither! I literally got yelled at to get changed 20 minutes ago and well...here I am. I didn't even know my parents were home since they were gone for a week or so."
"James, get in here!" His dad said loudly. We glanced at each other and I closed the door behind him and showed him to the dining room.
"I assume you two know each other?" My dad asked glancing at James and i who sat beside each other at the table. I nodded scared, and James cleared his throat and replied "Yes sir, we go to school together."
I felt my palms become sweaty as I remembered how James knew he abused me that time. I was scared, scared that James wouldn't hold back his words and that I'd end up in deeper shit than before.
Keeping my fingers crossed, I hoped that he had forgotten.
A hand on my thigh made me jump. It gave a comforting squeeze as I realised the hand belonged to James. I glanced at him, smiling a little for the first time tonight.
My parents as well as James father all sat making small talk while sipping on their rich red wine. The smell of the food cooking in the room next door drafted up my nostrils making my stomach churn more nervously than before.
James and I were sitting in silent the whole time, not looking at one another or talking. I think we were both scared of our parents.
And when I thought the night couldn't get any worse, a cheepy voice filled the room as another one of our apparent guests arrived.
My sister.
