Chapter 7 Battle Royal

Snapping my mouth closed I ran outside and crossed the street to  Number 22. I wasn't thinking, just reacting.

As soon as my purple Reebok sneakers touched the freshly mown grass my body froze.

Oh no! Not again!

All I could do was stare at the front of the house while my mind scrambled to find a way to break the binding spell.

"Coco! What's gotten into you!"
I heard Wuss yelling however I couldn't  turn my head to see what he was doing.

The brown front door of the house swung opened and I caught a glimpse of a shadowy foyer leading into a solid block of blackness.

Then Wuss was standing beside me looking incensed.

"Have you gone loco?
What're you up too?"

(I can't move you idiot!)

His eyes narrowed as he peered into my face.

"Coco?
Why're you just standing here like lawn furniture?"

(Because I CAN'T MOVE!!!)

"Well I'm going to be neighborly".

Wuss said and purposely took one step towards the porch and with a sizzling crackle and blue flash of light he was thrown twenty feet away!

I couldn't turn around to see if he was okay.
All I could do was keep the hope alive that he was.
Apparently the witch had conjured an invisible force field around the front of her house.

Neither Lucas or Estine had mentioned anything about a friggin force field!

The red haired woman stepped out on the porch and regarded me with cold green eyes.
She was wearing a blue silk robe and a ruby pendant on a fine silver chain around her long neck.

"So.
We meet at last
daughter of Estine".
She sneered.

It was the first time that I'd heard her voice outside my head and it sounded even colder in person.

(Where's my family?)
I demanded furiously.

Uda raised a perfectly arched red brow.
"Wouldn't you like to know?".
she taunted me.

Then in my head I heard Estine clearly say:

(She's unable to hear me.
I'm on the way.
I got treed by a dog and had to wait until a fireman rescued me.

But in the meantime;

Break the connection)

I began to strain against the invisible force ( it didn't feel like puppet master strings this time)

But like I was surrounded by a rigid  vise.

How ever nothing was happening.

(Her powers are stronger the closer you are to her house.
I had forgotten that)

Estine said regretfully.

(Thanks a lot Estine!)
I thought it as sarcastically as I could.

Redoubling my efforts I began to push with all my might against the spell and sensed the tiniest give. Encouraged I pushed even harder.

"I see you straining to disband my binding spell.
It isn't gonna work.
I'm far stronger than you are child".
Uda said with a confident smile.

(Estine! Lucas!
Hurry!) I thought it as hard and with as much urgency as I could muster.

The tiny crack  that I'd created began to spread.
