I wake up the next day in Tobias's arms. I keep my eyes closed and breath in his scent. The smell of safety. He stirs and I know he's staring at me.
"You've got to stop doing that," I say with a laugh.
"Then you've got to stop smelling me, that is a weird sentence," he says, we laugh.
"Fair enough," I say, laughing. We kiss and get up. I grab some clothes and go to the bathroom and shower. I get out and put on a black fitted shirt, short black shorts, and black wedges. I go through my makeup and try something Christina did for me once. I put eyeliner on and make a subtle design next to my eye. I also do a black smokey eye and use deep red lipstick. I put my hair in a high ponytail and look in the mirror. I'm proud of myself. I look pretty. I smile and step out of the bathroom.
"Is there a Christina hiding in there?" Tobias asks, looking around the bathroom.
"No," I say, laughing.
"I mean you look... Wow!" He exclaims. I blush. He uses his fingers to tip my chin up and kisses me. I pull back and rest my forehead on his.
"Let's spend the day together," I say.
"Okay," he says. I kiss him again but he pulls back. "I have an idea," he smirks. "We should go through our fear landscapes." I smile, I want to see what fears I do and don't have. Preferably only one, but that can't happen. I kiss him one more time and grab his hand. We walk to the fear landscape room and decide to go in his first. We inject each other.
"Heights," I say. I love heights, but they terrify him. I grab his hand and jump. It goes to confinement. "Confinement. I know how to fix this."
"Mmhmm how?" He asks, his voice tight. I kiss him and wrap my arms around his neck he wraps his arms around waist and I swing my leg so I sit on top of him. The scenario changes.
"Killing the innocent," I say. "Wait, what?" A hand clamps over my mouth and drags me toward crashing water. The Chasm. I'm getting kidnapped. I start crying, which leads to sobbing, and I scream Tobias's name. He can't do anything, his fear is of not being able to save me when I'm in danger. This is a simulation. I'm going to be fine. It switches. Marcus. Before he can do anything, I yank his belt away and whip him with it. It's over.
"It changed," he says.
"Let's go into mine," I say, then swallow hard. We inject each other and go into mine. The freaking crows. Tobias hands me a gun. I smile at him. We shoot the crows. Drowning. He kisses me, even though this is one of both our fears. A small box, confinement, and my drowning. The fear changes and this one is abduction. Only Tobias is the one taking me. I look at Tobias and see the instructor face, only meaner. I calm down, he won't hurt me. It changes. Peter. The match is lit and I wish for rain. It changes. Intimacy. A woman holds a gun to my head, wait, it skipped one. Tobias stands in front of me. The rest of my family behind him. I just let her shoot me and it's over. Tobias hugs me.
"Tris, I'm so sorry I had no control over myself! I would never hurt you-" I cut him off.
"Tobias, it's okay. I know you wouldn't hurt me," I say, then kiss him. I pull back. "Hey, it changed. And I lost one. Now I'm Six." He smiles and kisses me again. He grabs my hand and we walk to our apartment. I love that, our apartment. I smile.
"What Tris?" Tobias asks.
"Just thinking about our apartment," I say, he smiles. We get there and AIT on the couch. "Do you ever want kids?" I ask.
"Of course," he says.
"I mean, not right now, I think we're too young. I also want to be married before... That," I explain. He kisses me.
"When ever you're ready, Tris," he says. I smile and kiss him again. We talk for a while before we get hungry. We go to dinner. When we get to the dinning hall, the whole group is there. We get our food and sit together. Everyone drops their food.
"What?" I ask.
"Did you do that?" Christina asks.
"Ya," I answer. She is in awe, along with the rest of the group. "It's not that big of a deal."
"Yes it is!" Christina exclaims.
"Why?" I ask.
"Cause you, like, hate make up!" She exclaims.
"I'm not that fond of this, but I really wanted to try. Also, you made me get Al that make up, might as well use it right?" I ask. She shrugs. I eat my hamburger and think back to my first meal here. I try to stifle a laugh but I can't
"What?" Zeke asks.
"I was just thinking of the first night I was here," I say. Everyone else starts to laugh a little until we're all dying of laughter and getting weird looks from other tables. "Remember Peter's face when I threw my shirt at him on the roof?" I ask my fellow former initiates. They nod and continue to laugh. Eventually we all stop and finish our food.
"Let's go back to the apartment," Tobias whispers in my ear.
"Okay," I whisper back. "We're going back to the apartment, bye guys!" I say. I grab his hand and we make our way back the apartment. Tobias lays on the couch and I lay on top of him, my head on his chest. He wraps his arms around me.
"I love you Tris," Tobias says. I turn my head and look at him.
"I love you, too," I say. He smiles and looks like he's thinking of something.
"What?" I ask.
"Just thinking," he says.
"What about?" I ask.
"You," he says, I look away and blush. "You're so cute when you blush," he says, making me blush more.
"Why did you pick me? You could have any girl in the compound and you chose me. Why?" I ask.
"Because you're beautiful-" He starts.
"No, I'm not. I'm not ugly but I'm not pretty," I say.
"Fine, you're not pretty." He starts, with a sly grin. "I like the way you look, you're deadly smart, and even know you know everything about my past, you don't treat me like a kicked puppy." I smile.
"Well," I start, "you're not." He kisses me gently and pulls the blanket on the back of the couch onto us. He pulls back.
"I love you Tris," he says. I smile.
"I love you too, Tobias," and that's how we sleep, on the couch, me on top of him.
