The sky was gray, bringing with it the promise of rain. It was your normal, average Monday morning in the town of Forks.

Aurora sat on a tree branch, her legs swinging back and forth as she kept an eye on one particular human and the scene unfolding before her.

Jonah Marais stands several feet away, getting out of his car and joking around which one of his friends. Both grab their backpacks before running towards the high school in order to meet up with his other friends. He was completely oblivious to her.

The young vampire had become infatuated with him only a few months ago, when she noticed him hiking through a forest by himself one day. He had been sitting down, partially obscured by the surrounding bushes, and utterly entranced by a baby deer slowly walking towards him.

It warmed her dead heart, despite having been hunting the same animal only moments prior.

"Are you ever going to talk to him?" Her best friend, Mark, questions as he suddenly appears next to her.

"Absolutely not."

"BOW DOWN TO THE QUEEN, YOU PEASANT POODLE!"

Aurora dances around the house triumphantly, having just beat Jack Avery in yet another game of checkers. The rest of her family sat around the living room, placing bets on how long it would be before he challenged her to a rematch.

Carmen and Zach cuddled together on the couch with Mark and Elle on the other side of it, Addilyn and Corbyn were laying together on the loveseat, Daniel was reading in the recliner, and Callie was consoling her significant other. Out of everyone, other than Aurora, Daniel was the only one without a partner, and she refused to let him find his first.

Outside of the house, a rather harsh storm beat against the windows, causing the lights to flicker every now and then. Anyone out in it would surely end up hurt or sick.

"I demand a-"

Three loud knocks resound throughout the house, cutting off Jack's challenge. Everyone shares a look, utterly confused. After all, they had never had a visitor and nobody even knew this house existed.

"I GOT IT!" Aurora and Daniel shout simultaneously, sprinting down the hallway. She gets there a split second after him, but pushes him away - so hard he flies up the stairs - and readjusts her shirt before opening the door.

Wind throws the door back completely and rain attacks the girl, but she doesn't notice as she stares at the figure before her.

"I'm so sorry to bother you," Jonah yells above the roaring storm, shielding his eyes to get a better look at her. "But could I come in until the storm passes? I'm kind of lost right now."

Against her better judgement, she grabs the boy by his soaked arm and pulls him inside before slamming the door shut.

Not even a foot away stands the boy she's thought about for months, the boy she never in a million years believed would ever look at her, let alone speak to her. He was dripping wet, with not even a thin jacket to cover his shivering body.

She bounces on the balls of her feet, suddenly all too aware of him staring at her. The rain could cover her freezing touch but it couldn't hide her other features, such as her unusually pale skin and ruby red eyes.

"Here's a towel," Daniel offers, dashing down the stairs at what was a slow pace for him and successfully distracting the boy.

"Thanks," he mutters gratefully, his teeth chattering as he wraps it around his body.

"No problem. You can stay as long as you like," Daniel offers a small smile before gesturing for him to follow. "Come on, you can change into dry clothes up here."

The second they turn their backs on her, Aurora runs back to the living room, where everyone stands rigidly.

"You know this means we'll have to leave soon."

Two months later

Aurora once again sits on a tree branch, her legs dangling as she watches the events unfold below.

Family and friends alike are dressed in black and crying through the outdoor service, staring forlornly at the closed casket and a large picture of Jonah Marais.

Jonah was beyond angry with her. She shouldn't have done it without asking for his consent first. But, he was bleeding out and she wasn't about to let him just die.

After he stayed in her home for a few hours that day, they hadn't came into contact with each other again. But that didn't mean she stopped checking in on him. Mark had wanted them to move immediately, but she managed to convince him to stop overreacting.

The teen had been driving home from a football game one night, when a semi truck came out of nowhere and barreled into his vehicle.

He would have died if she hadn't intervened. She thought she was doing the right thing.

Now, she wasn't so sure.
