Mornings, the time for every diurnal creature to wake up and start the day. The birds will be singing, the sun will be shinning! Most people were ready to get up, and had a bounce in there step. I am not one of those people.I groan and force my face deeper into my pillow as I hear Rover's cawing. The stupid rooster couldn't tell the difference between dawn and dusk! I glance up, groaning at the sight of the new day. Bon sang.. the rooster was right, this time. Sitting up, I wipe my face of sleep. My eyes look to the window, the morning light just barely peeks over. I glare.
Whether I like it or not, today was another day. One filled with chores that needed to be done.
I sigh and throw my covers off myself. I swing my legs over, pushing my feet into my boots. I stand up with a stretch, and wince as I heard something pop in my back. Yup, definitely woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. I glance across from me, my sister still sound asleep. How she sleeps through the rooster's crowing, I might never know.
I wince as I hear another scream leave the rooster's throat. "Okay, okay, I'm coming!" I shout and exit our room. Quickly moving through the house, I grab the chicken feed and open the door to the cold morning air. I yawn and throw the seeds, the screaming chicken swarming my feet. Rover jumps off the fence and shoves his way into the crowd.
I frown down at the rooster as he pushes the females out of his way. Hm, men. Always pushing and shoving others to get whatever they want. I sigh and shake my head, stepping over the birds and walk to the chicken coop. I open the top lid, holding it with one arm to keep it from hitting my head. Glancing over my shoulder, I check to make sure the chickens are still eating before I reach down and carefully pick up the four visible eggs. I place them inside my pockets and lower the lid back into place.
Quickly walking pass the still feeding chickens, I sigh in relief as my hand touches the door knob. I scream as I felt something touch my foot. I look down and glare at Rover. "Well, that was quite rude, wasn't it?" I whisper to the bird, and push him away with my foot. He crows at me again, I shriek and open the door, slamming it shut behind me.
I've never liked birds. Mostly chickens. I'm fine with most birds, but chickens?! No! Never will I ever befriend a chicken!
I shiver and walk across the tiny house. Once I reach our room, I knock. "Isabelle? Are you dressed?" I call out. No reply. I knock again. "Come on, Isabelle, we have work to do! I can not do it all by myself!" Still, no reply. Just a loud snore. I sigh and step inside. I look to the bed across from mine and frown. Just as I had thought, she was still asleep. I walk toward her and lean down beside my sister's bed, placing my hand on her shoulder. "Belle? Belle..." I whisper, shaking her shoulder. She mumbles something and slowly her eyes open, I smile as her green eyes meet my brown ones. "Let's go, sleepy head, we don't have time to lay in bed all day!"
"Oh, wouldn't that be just lovely!" She smiles and stretches. "Could you imagine, Lucinda? Having to do nothing all day! Could you imagine the amounts of books I could read if I didn't need to work?!" She says gleefully.
I smirk and laugh. "Yes, that will be the day." More like never. I leave the room and stop at the door. I look back at her. I frown as I notice her still lying in bed. "Isabelle, come on!" She groans and nods.
I close the door and wait for a few moments as she gets dress. "So, did my girls lay any eggs today?" She asks.
I shiver at the mention of those birds. "Yes," I say. "They did well today, I found four eggs in the coop this morning." I jump as the door suddenly opens, revealing my sister in her pale blue dress.
"They laid eggs?!" She shouts, following me into our small kitchen.
I nod, digging my hand into my pocket, I pull out the small eggs and show them to her. She laughs with delight and snatches them from my hand. I laugh at her quick pace to make breakfast. "I'm going to see if Betsy still has some milk in her, okay?" I say and walk to the door.
