Special Chapter: Halloween Exclusive / Hwaseong Serial Murders
Part One
_____A year ago
"T-they are trailing after me," Rosé's trembling voice was constantly interrupted by the static sounds produced by the telephone, making her sound even more ragged and distant then she already was over at the other end of the line. "What's going to happen to me now?" she nearly whimpered from fright, her limbs faltering and almost dysfunctional.
Rosé paused and looked behind her shoulders, her eyes frantically darting all across each border on a lookout for any hidden figures from the footsteps she heard trailing stealthily behind her like a thief about to commit a crime. Her heart had palpitated faster, her breaths came out shallow. "Who's there?!" she turned around so abruptly and screamed out into the dark void. The tall, menacing trees loomed over her and casted a gloomy shadow as she continued to eye the eerie canopies and the thick, ebony tree barks in suspicion. "Stop hiding from me, you coward!"
And suddenly, as if the air stilled, the ambience of the night dissipating into an interlude, Rosé watched as the hair on her arms stood up by the sudden change in atmosphere like soldiers listening to a command, the goosebumps forming on the surface of her skin in motion.
The millions of leaves shaped like oval amethysts scattered all around her. The brown, almost golden, color of it with a purple and green hue from the moonlight and decay mystified the aura even more. And if she listened even more closely, she might have been able to hear the sound of leaves being crushed as someone shuffled their feet from thirst and desperation for blood on their hands.
Like the air itself, she felt herself stilled. The forest suddenly exuded a pungent, metallic smell that had almost made her choke to death without the hands of a murderer. "Yuck, what is that smell?" she mumbled to herself as she repulsed and covered every breathing hole using the small palm of her hand.
"Smell? What sm-ell?" The line swiftly got reconnected again. Rosé squeaked in surprise at the deep voice, too used to the silence that bestowed upon her, albeit it being merely a few minutes. "Hello? Are you still there?"
"Y-yes I'm here!" She frowned, the wires in her brain racking itself against the skull of her head from trying to figure out where that putrid smell suddenly came from. "There's just this. . .weird smell all of a sudden. The natural smell of the earth suddenly overtook into something else."
"Wh-at sm-e-ll?" The line kept on getting reconnected and disconnected, his words almost sounding unintelligible to the ears.
"A really acrid smell," Rosé frown got even more deeper, as if she finally figured out something. "It almost smells like bloo-," but she never got to finish her sentence as she had let out a bloodcurdling scream of absolute terror from feeling her legs pulled from below, her body acting like a useless ragdoll and her phone harshly thrown away from her at a great distance, bouncing onto the dirty, dusty soil. Her pulse quickened, her heart thudded rapidly against her chest like a butterfly trying to escape from a jar. She could almost feel a pile of vomit projecting through her throat from the amount of fright and hysteria she was facing the whole time she was being dragged in fast speed across the ground.
