You were in your third year at school and it was grandparents day. A day that Grandpa and I will never forget, especially the part of it where you had to read us a story. You started reading and every page you turned, you read more fluently. When you finished the first book, you turned around and fetched a more difficult story. I silently wondered if you would be able to read it, but your eyes sparkled as you said: "I actually wanted to read this one for you."
We were so proud of you, we couldn't believe that you could do it, you read it without any trouble. Your teacher came to meet us, he told us that we could be very proud of you because you were one of his best students.
We had so much fun that day, they played some music and you taught grandpa and me to dance. We had so much fun, I tried to keep up with all your moves but I guess I was too slow and all that Grandpa did was laughing at me.
Afterward, you spoilt us with tea and cheesecake that you bought for us from your own pocket money. You introduced us to some of your school friends that we haven't met before. Grandpa and I still talk about it, it is such a special memory.
Inola was amazing today, Grandma, I gave her a book that was meant for sixteen to seventeen-year-olds to read and she aced it. I couldn't believe how she read it with so much confidence. The pronouncing of her words, even her voice and the way she acted when she read. I think she might even win a reading competition if she carries on like this. James got so excited, he hugged me and we both landed in the pool and of course, the dogs joined.
Then the most amazing thing happened; Inola rolled her wheelchair right to the side of the swimming pool, she took off her shoes and her sundress to reveal her bathing suit. She lifted herself with her hands and jumped into the water. She was like a fish in the water and we had a lot of fun. When I asked her about the girl, who wanted to bring her another book, she said the girl forgot the book, but she enjoyed her reading. The girls in the dormitory gathered around her when she started reading. That explains her confidence.
I had to leave earlier to dress for work and James lent me one of his shirts to wear home. My clothes were wet and soggy. When he came to the restaurant that evening he seemed in a good mood and I couldn't help to wonder if it was about the hug.
He told me that Inola asked him to give her some inspirational verses from the Bible. She told him that there was one very shy girl that asked her to read to her from the Bible and she said it would make sense to read the uplifting texts. He confessed that he did not know many and asked me if I could help him. I gave him Isaiah 9, 1 Corinthians 13, Proverbs 31:10, Mathews 5 and John 1, these are the ones that you always read to us, Grandma. I hope that will help her. I have made a mental note to look for more. Our eyes met for a few seconds and again there was an admiring look in his eyes.
