We were all together for a barbeque, Jason was about three years old and was watching your dad lighting the fire. He was intrigued by the small flame of the lighter, growing suddenly big when it is held underneath the kindling and much bigger when the wood starting to burn.
Suddenly the sirens of an ambulance were heard, getting louder as it came nearer, his eyes went big and he ran to Grandpa where he was watching everything from his chair. "It's a big hurt!" He cried and stretched his little arms out to Grandpa: "Can I sit on your lap, Grandpa?" He asked and couldn't get fast enough on Grandpa's lap. He nestled his head underneath Grandpa's chin and a few minutes later he was fast asleep, safe and sound on his Grandpa's lap and protected by his big body and strong arms. The ambulance must have frightened him badly and Grandpa's lap became his safe haven.
I had an experience today that I can't get out of my mind. After she did her piece in front of the class, Anthea, a girl that is walking with custom made boots, as Inola's returned to my desk with a note from her mother, informing me that she would be hospitalized on Monday for an operation on her feet. For a moment I did not know what to say, then I realized she was waiting for me to say something.
"Oh, the doctors are going to repair your feet, that is great, isn't it?" She lowered her eyes and I realized that she must be so afraid. "Are you afraid?" She lifted her head slowly and nod and I noticed the tears in her eyes. "Awe, come here," I hugged her and rubbed her back. "You know you are going to sleep while they work on your feet don't you?" "Yes, but it's still going to hurt afterward, and I won't be able to walk for weeks."
"Okay if you have a nice story like this one to read, would it be easier to stay in bed for a few weeks?" I gave her one of my own books that I wanted to read for the class and felt a pang in my heart as she received it with such a grateful expression and gave me a big hug.
"Remember after the operation you will walk much easier and might even be able to wear nice shoes, that's something to look forward to, isn't it?" She nodded and gave me a shy smile as she walked away with the book clamped underneath her one arm and her walking stick in her other hand.
I know I have to do more but at this moment I just can't imagine what I can do to help this little girl other than to pray that her operation will be successful. I read the note again and noticed that the hospital's name and her mom's phone number was included. That will be helpful, I will start by phoning her mom this afternoon and work on a plan to make those hours in bed easier.
