You always knew something was off about him.
~~~

"BOO!" a voice shouted from behind you, scaring the life out of you.

You screamed and whirled around to face the person who made you jump out of your skin.

He had a big goofy grin plastered on his face.

You glared at the boy.

Oh how you wished you could just slap the grin off of his annoyingly handsome face.

"Hansol Vernon Chwe!" (Is that how you spell his name?😅) You crossed your arms and glared at him. "You know I hate it when people scare me!"

He didn't do anything but to laugh so hard until you thought that his face was gonna permanently have a big grin plastered on it.

"I just couldn't help it. You're so funny when you get scared!" he said and pointed a finger to you, clutching his stomach as he laughed some more.

You just ignored him and walked ahead.

"Hey wait for me!" he called from behind as he quickly caught up to you.

It was the season leaves started to fall and cover the ground with a blanket of colorful hues of red and yellow and orange. The season everyone went out to go pumpkin picking and going around on hay rides and enjoying apple cider.

You loved this season. You loved going outside and enjoying the crispy breeze while watching the red and orange and yellow leaves fall from trees. Or you just simply enjoyed staying indoors with a hot drink and a book.

Tonight, the weather felt just right. It was the middle of autumn. And the night air was soothing and relaxing. You breathed in the fresh air and let out a content sigh.

"The air is so fresh." you said as you closed your eyes for a brief second and smiled.

"Hmm? Yeah, it is. Especially at night." your childhood friend replied. He tucked his hands inside his jeans pockets. He had a smile on his face too as you two walked down the road to your neighborhood.

It was a typical day. You guys were on the way home from the library. You had an English assignment and coincidentally, Vernon was your partner. So you two spent more time in the library more often. You two would go straight to the library after school and take some snack breaks. Then you would just chat and talk for a while until it was getting dark.

You two lived near each other, so you always walked home together.

Vernon always insists that he walks you home to your doorstep, even though you always say that you'll be alright on your own. But he can be quite stubborn, and you didn't mind his company. In fact, you always felt happy and safe around him.

He was always kind to you. And you felt like he was always there for you and to protect you. You were always there for each other. After all, you two were childhood friends.

You knew everything there is about him. And he was the only friend you trusted and that was always there for you.
