"Hi! Quick, come in. You must be freezing." Jamia rushed us through the door. As soon as we took off our shoes, Philip ran into my arms.
"Grandpa!" He hugged me tightly. "Kevin!" He yelled when he saw him standing next to me.
"Hey, pal." Kevin said and picked him up. "You're so big, what do they feed you huh?" Kevin joked and made Philip laugh.
"Quick! Santa left some presents for you too." He tugged at our sleeves.
"I think he overdosed on sugar." I looked at Jamia who just shrugged and laughed.
We entered the living room and greeted Toni and Gerard who sat by the Christmass tree, waiting for us. We all had to sit down and let Philip give us our presents. We opened them and thanked 'Santa' and then Toni told us to move to the kitchen to eat dinner. Kevin helped me stand up and I cracked my back.
"Are you getting old?" Jamia joked.
"Oh, shut up, I'm only 43." I laughed and moved past her to the table. I sat down next to Kevin and pecked his lips. "Happy anniversary." I whispered to him so no one could hear. We had been together for three years and I never thought I'd be so happy again.
"How are the calendars coming along, dad?" Toni asked me about my latest project.
"Just yesterday I had finished editing the photos and tomorrow they'll be printed." I informed them, promising to get one for them too.
After dinner, Jamia, Kevin, Toni, and Philip moved to the living room to watch some Christmass movies and Gerard and I went to smoke outside. I always felt a little awkward around him ever since we broke up.
"So how are you?" He asked me once we were alone. We rarely got to meet each other, we basically stopped talking unless there was a family meeting or when I visited them because of Philip.
"I'm fine." I told him taking a drag. "I'm going to Scotland with Kevin in February." I said and he raised his eyebrows and nodded. We stood in silence for a while just smoking until Gerard pointed at the sky.
"Look, Cassiopeia." He told me and I smiled to myself.
Just like old times. Now everything really was getting better.
