Leilani

Dad came and pulled me out of school early.
He called my mom to meet him at the house.
The car ride was so uncomfortable.
He didn't say anything the entire time.
My heart started to pound as we got out of the car and walked into the house.

"What the hell is going on Eli?" My mom asked.
Dad glared at her as he took a seat on the edge of the couch. He didn't say anything and the tension was thick, I was so nervous I swear I was gonna cry.

"Why is our seventeen year old daughter involved with an older gang banger?" He asked calmly.

"He's barely twenty one." My mom scoffed.
My dad looked at her in disbelief as he laughed.
"Is that your only defense?" He asked.

"He's in a gang Rosaria! He's got two fucking strikes, are you not worried about him getting our daughter raped or killed or pregnant? She will have no future being involved with a fucking felon!" He yelled.

His voice commanded the room and it made me jump. Dad never yelled.
When he did it scared the fucking shit out of me.

"Don't talk about him like that, you know nothing about Oscar." She said as she moved closer to him.

He laughed, "Do you you want our baby girl to end up like you did with Nate?" He asked.

She shook her head, "I know you want to protect her but Oscar is a good person he's good for her."

"No way in hell is a fucking Cholo good for my daughter, she's leaving freeridge she's coming with me because she needs at least one parent who's in their right mind and thinking about her future." Dad said calmly.

I started to cry.
"Daddy, don't do this. I love him."

He sighed and walked up to me.
"Baby, I know you think this is the worst thing in the world but when you're older and you have a life and a career you'll look back at this and know it was right, you don't want to be stuck in the hood, you don't want a life with a gangbanger. He's a two time felon at twenty, he's going to go back to jail."

He rubbed his head as I cried and cried and cried.
"I'm doing this for you and your future, you're young and a guy like that is taking advantage of you because you're beautiful and naive, they only want sex and if he gets you pregnant he's going to bail or end up in jail again like I said, his is for you."

"I don't want to leave, I love him." I cried.
"Daddy please."

"Get your things." He said.

I shook my head no and cried.
"Eli, you think you're helping but you're taking her away from everything she knows and loves." Mom said.

Dad glared at her again.
"I'm taking her away from a shit life, you have not been taking care of her at all. I didn't realize how bad it was but I'm stepping in." He said.

He snatched my phone out of my hand and through it on the bed. He walked into my room himself and packed my bags throwing them in his car.

I cried harder now.
I was leaving.
"Let's go Leilani." He said standing in the door.

"Please." I said one last time.
I felt his hands on me and he picked me up and threw me in the car, careful of not hurting me.
My mom was in the driveway screaming and crying as my dad backed up and drove off.

I couldn't breathe I was hysterical.
"Hate me all you want, I'm doing this because i love you and you cannot end up like how your mother and I did. You're going to have a good life and I can't let you be with someone like that Oscar guy." He said.

"You love San Diego, you'll get past this, you'll be ok, this will be just a memory one day"

It wouldn't.
I would never get over this.
He took me away from the thing I love most.
