Light streamed through the blinds and lit up the dust hanging in the air. It was a simple waiting room. There were several of us there each with our portfolios gripped tightly in our hands. We sat in silence, there was no need for meaningless chit chat, we were all put up against each other. It was a battle to the death. The better stylist would win that day and I prayed to the gods that it would be my day, that I would be the one coming out on top. It was my turn. I needed it.
“Ms Domani Nemesio?” a petite lady said reading my name incorrectly off of a clip-board. I was next.
I got to my feet and walked gallantly to the door. This was it.
The next room was set up very cautiously. There was only artificial light that existed in this place.
“Ms Nemesio?”
I simply nodded.
There were three of them sat at a table and a single seat in front of them. I took the chair, it was obviously meant for me.
The lady on the left stretched her arm and opened her hand, signalling for me to give her my portfolio. She flicked through it roughly without really taking in any of my hard work. I didn’t like her. She then handed it to the man in the middle, he at least took the time to soak in my work. The last one, he smiled at a few pages. Two out of three. I’ve got this. At least I really hope so.
“What do you like to do in your spare time?” The man in the middle said, his Adam’s apple bobbing.
“Uh, I love listening to music. Nothing makes my day more than sitting down after a long day, with a cup of tea and just listening to good music.” I said losing myself.
“Really?” The one on the right smiled. “What kind of music?”
“Depends on how I feel really. The Eagles and Bread are always quite calming.” I said still in my reverie.
“I think that’ll be enough for the day.” The tall man in the middle said sitting back in his chair. “We have your information here. We’ll contact you.”
“Uh....Thank you.” My voice seemed cracked as I was pulled out of my haze.
They kept my portfolio, which I didn’t mind all that much. I had another two or three back at home. My straight stance faltered as I walked out of the door. A walk of shame.
The rest of my day consisted of eating sushi alone, driving to the grocery store to grab some ingredients for dinner, and then picking up the little guy from day-care. Once home, I made dinner, ate, washed the little guy, got him ready for bed, and put him to sleep.
The interview got to me, and it was my fault that I had let that happen. I finally had my ‘me’ time. Our little house was quiet. I quickly poured myself a rum and coke and found my way to the stereo. My iPod was plugged in as per usual and I simply hit play. Nat King Cole’s Chestnuts whispered in my ears. I was thankful that I had put the music down this time. My fingers turned the volume dial a little and the sound of violins wrapped around my body. It took my hand in its own and swayed me to its beat. I hummed along not really noticing. How did I get myself into this? 21 and with a 2 year old? Single? With a job that I was recently ‘made redundant’. Money was scant and this interview meant everything. I sighed as the song neared it’s end. Sculling the drink back, I knew it would ease my nerves and help me sleep.
RING – RING! RING – RING! RI –
“Hello?” I tried to answer quickly. I didn’t want Alastair to wake up.
“Ms Ne-me-zio?”
“Speaking.” My voice was hoarse from sleep.
“We just wanted to say that you got the job? Can you come in next week? We start filming the week after but we need to have a few meetings on how the characters looks and we’ll get input from you, the actors and the director.”
“Uh...” I was speechless. My body was bolt up in my bed. What the heck just happened?
“We can just send you the details, is email okay with you?” the unknown voice asked from the receiver.
“Yes. That would be perfect. Thank you.” I said disbelieving.
“Cool, that will be out to you in a few minutes. If you don’t receive it, I’ve sent you a txt of our phone number.” My phone beeped next to my ear. “So we’ll see you next week Monday?”
“Yes. Next week Monday.” I smiled, making a mental note.
The caller hung up and left me with the beeping. Did this just happen? Was I still dreaming?
“Mummy!” called Alastair from his room opposite mine. The walls were paper thin.
If this were a dream, Alastair would still be asleep. I’m not dreaming. Holy heck.
