Al fed, check. Baby bag ready, check. No breakfast, but no worries. Coffee –
I turned my heel; the coffee was still sitting patiently on the kitchen bench top. Grabbing the cold cup, I downed it like I used to in my party days, my ‘before being a mum’ days.
Al stood, his bright eyes watching me. This was something he’d seen me do plenty of times. He knew I loved my coffee. His bag was over my shoulder and I quickly grabbed my keys and my own black bag. Everything seemed to be perfect but I still felt as though I were forgetting one thing. Shrugging off the ludicrous idea, we set of to the car.
On the drive to Alastair’s day-care, I’d finally figured it out. “Fuck!” I blurted over the music.
“Fuck!” Al repeated.
“Oh shit.”
“Fuck! Mummy! Fuck.” He said with a mischievous look on his face.
“Al, mummy said a bad word. I’m sorry hun.” I said through the rear view mirror. “That’s a naughty word, you shouldn’t say it.”
“Fuck.”
“AL!” I whipped my head around to give him a stern look.
Al’s smile disappeared and was replaced with ‘puppy dog’ face. His eyes looked up at me and my heart melted. The little guy knew I was a pushover. I held my ground and looked back to the road. I pulled in to the car park and gathered his things before unbuckling him. He ran up to the door and I trudged behind. I was always one for overpacking.
“Good morning Dom.” Cheryl, one of Al’s teachers smiled at me.
“Hey,” my breath was a little ragged. “Al learned a new word this morning. I told him it was bad...I kind of blurted it out in the car. I apologize.”
She looked back at me with a questioning yet understanding look, “What was the word?”
“Fuck. He stopped when I gave him ‘the glare’ but just tell him off if he does it again.”
“Of course, no worries. Let me take those, you’re late I’m guessing?” she asked with a slight chuckle.
“Yes, very much so.” I answered handing her the bag and jacket. “I’ll see you guys later today. See you hun! I love you.” I blew Al a kiss and he blew one back. Bless him.
Driving to the set today was ridiculous. Being this late was a first for me and I hoped that no one would care too much. I was great at my job. Forgetting to put on my own make up this morning was the icing on the cake. It was definitely a difficult morning. My car swerved into the car park and I hastily parked in my space. Luckily, my other bags were already inside. Grabbing my bag, I ran to the entrance and scanned my card.
The sound of my shoes rapped loudly as I took long and large strides to my room. Tom was coming in today, checking my phone, I knew he’d already be there and I was already twenty minutes late. “Fuck.”
Grabbing the knob of the door and turning it, I entered the room. My assistant was already there, she’d made Tom a coffee and set up my stuff for me. Thank fuck.
“I’m so sorry I’m so late guys. Al was a bit of a challenge this morning and I woke up late and –
“Don’t worry about it. Really. It’s totally fine.” Tom hushed me, putting his coffee down on the bench before him.
“I’m still really sorry. I feel rather rotten for keeping you both here.” I said plopping my bag onto the sofa.
“Really, you have nothing to worry about. Ruth here has been catering to me and we’ve just been relaxing.” He said gesturing to my assistant.
