Through doing Chris’ hair, I would catch Tom looking solemnly at me, or with his face hidden. Tom was so perfect. It almost hurt. It was painful for various reasons. I was not doing his hair, which meant that he was physically further from me, out of my reach. I could not smell that intoxicating cologne of his, I longed for that smell. His emotional distress was breaking my frail heart, and the perfection of him was hurting me because I knew, reality was setting in now. It would not work. Every equation I tried did not work; nothing equalled the two of us living happily ever after.
I had finished Chris’ hair faster than the girls and all that was left was to style it.
“I’m so sorry I’m late! The doctor was taking so long and they got my name wrong on the list and – damn, it’s just been a really bad morning.” Klarice burst into the trailer with her bags on her shoulders. Her hair was starting to curl and you could tell she was stressed.
“Don’t worry about it, I’m not.” I forced a smile. “I just asked Ruth to take over for you. The two of them look like their almost done anyway.”
“I thought I was doing Chris’ hair?” she asked confused, putting her bags down.
“Tom’s is easier anyway, with it being dark and all.” I smiled at her. “You can take over here if you’d like? All the extensions are in and all you need to do is style it for me.”
Klarice was good; I really enjoyed working with her because I knew she would get the job done well, and fast. She was on to it straight away, taking out what she needed and –
She stopped for a second, “Can I change this song?”
I hadn’t even noticed what it was and simply said, “Go for it.”
After she had flicked through, she pressed play and all I could hear was a girl singing wordlessly. Just ‘bum-bums’ and a bit of humming. I knew exactly what the song was. It was one of my shower singing songs and I could feel the blush growing in my cheeks.
“Uh, Ruth thank you so much for helping out. I’ll put it down on your reference. You can take photos if you’d like, if that’s alright with Tom?” I said looking towards him.
“Of course darling.” He smiled at her through the mirror. His eyes did not sparkle, there was no magic in it. My heart sunk.
The rest of the morning went smoothly. Ruth and Gemma assisted the two of us when we needed them. They all got us coffee and soon Tom and Chris were off to the make-up department.
“I really am sorry for being late this morning.” Klarice said taking a sip of her coffee. We were taking a break while Tom and Chris were getting their make-up done.
“And I’m really saying, don’t worry about it.” I smiled at her gripping onto my hot coffee cup. Looking out to the crew, they were setting up the scene that Chris and Loki were going to shoot. The ambience was calmer than I thought it would be. Maybe it was due to the fact that it was only the first shoot. Everyone was running around, doing what they needed to do, I could see the sound people prepping their equipment as were the lighting people. It was all too surreal and the high ceilings seemed endless as they hovered above us, domineering.
Maybe it was because I hadn’t had a drink of water all day, but by the time we got back from our break, my body was starting to feel weak, my back and arms ached. Shrugging it off, I walked into the trailer with Klarice following behind me.
“Oh sorry.” It was Tom. The only thing missing was his outfit. He was Loki and it was shocking to see him look so different.
“No, I’m sorry. It was my fault.” I said, my voice was hoarse.
