a dream

I was choking,

heart beating ;

pulse at the speed of a freight train

your face, your warm familiar face,

was the only thing my mind could process

in a sea of strangers.

I tried so hard, with every waking cell in my body,

to leave you behind,

to live,

to breathe,

but I couldn't.

the heart refuses to acknowledge what the mind already knows-

that you are never coming back,

and I am going to have to make my peace with that.
