Charlotte ||

 It's been a week since Gilbert's accident. He's still not awake. Charlotte sat by his bedside, once again, missing school. She couldn't go to school. She couldn't face everyone after this tragic event. When she saw all of them for those few minutes the other day, it was horrible. She punched Billy, her hand still hurts, but it was worth it.

Charlotte was slowly drifting off on her chair when she heard something move. Bash had left to visit his family and she was the only one left in the house. Her eyes landed on Gilbert. His hand had moved. Then it moved again. His eyes weren't moving or his lips, but she was still freaking out. "Gilbert!" She exclaimed grabbing his hand. Then there was no more movement. Nothing. Charlotte's smile slowly faded and she sat back down in her seat.

This morning Charlotte was awakened by her mother, who was scolding her. "Charlotte! Are you nuts?" She yelled, "you skipped school to stay with that boy you barely know!" The boy she "barely" knows happens to be Gilbert. She loves Gilbert and she knows him better than anybody else but she couldn't tell her mother that, not yet. "You're going to school today Charlotte!" Her mother yelled and left her room without leaving Charlotte a chance to argue with her.

Charlotte ate breakfast in silence. She brushed her teeth and grabbed her bag. As she walked down the path all she could think about was Gilbert. What if he woke up and she wasn't there. He would think she left him behind. She also thought about what Billy looked like, and how good it would feel to see his face all messed up.

Charlotte dreaded opening up the big white door to the schoolhouse, but she did anyway and entered. Everybody turned around to see her, and her pale face. They noticed the dark circles under her eyes, the pain behind her eyes, and how fake her smile was. They could tell all she wanted was to break down, but most didn't care and turned back around and continued to talk to their friends. Charlotte made her way over to Anne. "Charlotte?" Anne asked in a surprised tone. Charlotte nodded and sat down next to her. Anne hugged her and smiled. "I'm glad your back," Charlotte kept quiet and just nodded with a tight smile.

Charlotte pulled her sketchbook out during class and began drawing a forest but in between the trees was a darkness reaching out. She never made anything to crazy, but now all she could think about is the dark taking Gilbert. She flicked her pencil drawing a million different lines for the leaves on the trees. Then it slowly began raining. The tapping against the window made Charlotte feel better. It made her think of the time her and Gilbert ran through the rain together. She smiled slightly at the memory.

At lunch, Charlotte decided to sit by herself and just watch the rain. She pulled out an apple and began taking bites. This just made her think of Gilbert's apple trees. She hopes that he didn't wake up, but also hopes he did. She can't wait until he does. She wants to know he's okay, but at the same time, she doesn't want him to wake up while she's not there.  Charlotte's eyes spotted a fox outside the window. A bright orange fox staring her down. Charlotte held her gaze as well. The creature was too beautiful for her to look away.

At the end of the day, Charlotte packed her things up and walked to Gilbert's house. When she entered she placed her book basket down, and took off her raincoat. She walked into Gilbert's room to find him in his similar spot. She then sat down. SHe grabbed his cold hand and kissed it. "I love you Gilbert," She told him every day hoping he would wake up at the sound of her voice.

Charlotte just sat and listened to the rain. Then she heard a loud gasp. Her head turned to see Gilbert sitting up with his eyes wide open. "Gilbert!" She rushed to him. She stood in front of him and grabbed his hands. She slowly took off the mask that was over his nose. Gilbert brought his hand up to her face. "Gilbert," She whispered. He nodded. Then he wrapped his arms around her. "Charlotte," He finally let out. He coughed a few times, and Charlotte helped lay back down. "What happened?" Gilbert asked. "You almost drowned," Charlotte said, "after we kissed you did something then Bash found you washed up on the shore," Gilbert shook his head, trying to figure out what happened. After a few minutes, his eyes lit up. "Yes! I remember!" He shouted like a little kid. "You dropped your bracelet I went to get it," Charlotte nodded. "I must have it somewhere," Gilbert said standing up then collapsing to the floor with a thud. "Gilbert!" Charlotte shouted.

After getting Gilbert back in bed, she made him some soup and then sat down with him. They both ate their soup in silence together. "I heard everything you said," Gilbert told Charlotte after a while. Charlotte blushed. She told him that she loves him almost every day. "You really love me?" He asked. Charlotte stared straight ahead not even peeking to see his reaction, "Yes Gilbert I love you," Charlotte answered his question. They both went silent. Both shocked at what she said. After five minutes of silence, Charlotte turned to face Gilbert. "Gil," She whispered. Then Gilbert grabbed her face and kissed her. Charlotte melted into the kiss. They couldn't let go of each other. Charlotte wouldn't let Gilbert slip away that easily.
