The training went worse then I thought. Allen didn't even look at me nor talk to me. I guess he really wants me to stay away. I watched as Joseph whispered something in Allen's ear. He nodded then started walking over to me.
"Hey."
"If you don't truly mean it then doesn't say it."
He looked at me confused.
"Oh come on you know what I'm talking about."
He straightened up.
"Actually I don't."
"Well, either you're lying or you're just stupid."
His tongue licked at his teeth like he was trying to get something out and he gazed over the woods.
"When I was in school my GPA was a 3.7 and I never lie. Well only when I have to."
My brain was trying to wrap around the fact that his GPA was higher than mine. How?
"So what are you talking about?"
"Oh um... Joseph, he told you to come over and apologize."
"No, he told me I did a good job."
"Oh."
" Yes he told me how upset I made you and yes he told me to apologize earlier I just didn't know how to go about it till. Well till I saw you staring at me the entire time."
Staring?
"I wasn't staring. I was just.... glancing over."
"Glancing?"
"Yes."
He gave me a warm laugh again then he turned towards me and looked serious.
"I'm sorry Scarlet. I shouldn't have said those things. Its just most things... words, weapons, and people I'm still not used to."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I have nothing else back home. If I didn't come back here they would have put me in something. I don't know what exactly but I don't want to be helpless. I've been helpless my whole damn life. The people I love the most die in front of me a-and I can't do anything about it because I'm pathetic. I need to get stronger."
"Allen this isn't the only way. This can really mess you up."
"Why are you here?"
That question shocked me. I feel the need to protect was the only reason I gave people but deep inside I have no idea why I'm here.
"Because I only thought of myself as a protector. An object.... tool waiting to be used. I never thought of myself as something else. I've always been used so I think that's my destiny. I....."
He cut me off and said "No. Don't think of yourself like that. You're more Scarlet. Much more."
"Ok guys see was that hard?"
Joseph interrupted our conversation across the training grounds. Trisha was the only one who yelled yes back at him.
I forgot how warm it was in our building. We all went inside and sat around the table.
"We only have to go through this two more times."
"Ugh, we trust each other already let me go home."
"No Trisha we have to. Tomorrow we will be in groups. Me and Scarlet against you three. No questions now go get some rest."
He wasn't kidding about the questions me and Trisha tried to talk to him. He just ignored us. Today was colder than yesterday. The snow on the ground made it harder to walk. I 'm so used to be in the south it almost never snowed South Carolina. He made us bring paintball guns.
