Ever since Tara and I had our talk, Maya had been a bit tad possessive over me. Of course she found out about Tara's plan on making it up to me. She saw the pot of yellow daisies Tara gave me before English started. Endless questions were shot at me then. Having no choice, I told her everything. Of course she didn't like it which led me here, at the stance, watching Maya warming up for the next game. She insisted that I be here. I would still be here even if she never asked me to.
"Checking me out?" Maya asked from afar, breaking me from trance.
Automatically, my eyes move on their own and I stare at without a doubt a beautiful figure. I swear, I wasn't checking her out earlier. But now I am. I mean, look at her. Who wouldn't drool at this sight? Slim long legs, strong thin arms and toned stomach underneath that jersey. That explains why many boys at this school are suddenly interested in volleyball games. Girls in shorts and sweats. Not to mention the cheerleaders. She really is hot. Feeling my face heating up, I look away, not knowing how to response. Shit. She really is a beauty. Why haven't I noticed that before? And why the heck am I noticing it now? Ugh. It must have been because of that kiss. Looking on my right to try to distract myself, my eyes land on another beauty. But this beauty broke my heart. She throws me a bright smile and waves. I nod awkwardly. It's been a while since she gave me that look and that was a year ago.
"No, you only look at me," Maya snapped, walking towards me.
She leans down, grabs my chin gently and places a kiss on my cheek. But this one feels a bit rough and intense. By the glare she's giving to Tara, it seems as if Maya's showing off her possessiveness. Tara's smile turns into a frown but when she catches me looking at her, she gives me a weak smile and looks away.
"I thought you were checking me out. You can't just check me out and then look at her," Maya whined.
Is this really happening? Did I hear her right? A wide grin is plastered on my face and it just makes Maya more upset.
"Why are you smiling like a big good?" she snarled while crossing her arms.
"Are you jealous?" I teased, trying to ease the mood.
"Yes," she replied instantly, which surprised me.
Really, the Maya I know all these while who's full of self-confidence and mature isn't here. This is a new side to her. It's a childish side. I have to admit...
"You look so cute right now," I blurted out.
The minute those words left my lips, I put my hand over them, trying to stop more words from coming out. Maya tilts her head, amused by my confession, which makes her look super, duper cuter.
"Well, usually people would say I'm beautiful but I'm guessing cute coming out of you should be more than enough," she leaned down, teasing me.
You are beautiful. And cute. Urgh. Covering my mouth with my hand is really a wise idea. I would have embarrassed myself if I don't keep my mouth shut. Maya's still staring at me with a big grin on her face. Now I'd like to wipe that off. Well, not really. She looks really appealing right now.
"Hmm... Cat got your tongue?" she asked, scooting closer to me.
I gulp as her face nears mine. Wait, why is she getting closer? This is too close! And why is it hot in here? Her eyes never leave my lips. Is she doing what I think she's doing? Is she leaning down for a kiss again? And at this time I freeze. I don't know why my face won't move to avoid her lips. I swear she's too close! I can feel her breath on my skin. And as our lips are about to touch, something stops her and I hear it too. Coach Harrison calls out to her.
"Get your butt in here! Game's about to start!" she yelled.
Maya groans while I sigh in relief. Hearing my sigh, she looks at me angrily so she grabs my uniform forward and presses her lips onto mine. My heart stops for a few seconds until Coach Harrison blows the whistle right next to us. Both of us jump in fear. And I see many people staring at us. Some guys even whistle at us.
"You can kiss her when you win the game. Now get your butt to the court!" Coach yelled.
She smiles sheepishly at Coach and takes off but not before turning my way to wink. I apologise at Coach but she grumbles something about kids these days. Luckily I'm off the hook. Maya can be reckless at times. Turning around, I see people start to whisper. Oh great. The rumour's starting.
"Oi you! Ey hot stuff!" Oliver yelled at me from the stance.
He asks me to sit next to him and I did. It really is uncomfortable when people start to whisper in front of you. What's more awkward is that you know they're talking about you. So rude. Sitting next to a friend is just what I need right now.
"I didn't know you guys dated," Oliver nudged me.
"We're not," I argued.
"Well, could have fooled me," he winked.
"Well, she kissed me!" I whined.
"Uhuh. And you kissed her back. That blush on your cheeks just proves that you enjoyed it," he wriggled his eyebrows.
I try to deny it but I couldn't. Yeah, I kind of-sort of- enjoyed it.
"Now, now. No need to get all shy with me. Let's focus on the game, it's starting. Unless you got your eyes fixed on your girl," he teased me again.
This time, instead of arguing, I just blush and keep my mouth quiet. The prospect of me being Maya's girlfriend is just unthinkable. I mean, would anyone have ever thought of it? I didn't. That's why this is all too much of a surprise for me. But, the idea doesn't seem too bad. Not because Maya's beautiful and stuff, it's more because of how she's always been there for me.
Would she turn out to be a monster just like Tara?
She wouldn't... Right? My eyes dart to the right where I caught Tara's looking at me. She looks sad. And somewhere in my chest, it hurts. A pang of guilt hits my nerve. And fear. No, Maya would never turn out like Tara. She saved me from that crazy girl even though she didn't know me. She always went out of her way to chase after me and make sure I'm safe. She shows me off by kissing my cheeks in front of the whole school like all the time. Nah, she'd never do me wrong. I'm sure of it. Oh damn. Do I like her that way?
***
Oh damn! The competition is on! And let me remind you, Violet is not in the picture yet. She will turn into a monster, I promise! BTW, if you guys hate this chapter, please say it. I'd take it down and write a new plot. I'm unsure myself coz really, at this point, Ivy could choose just about anyone.
