Yesterday it rained like it would never stop. Hard rain banged so loudly against our roofs and the road. But it stopped this morning, at the first light of the day. It is a good morning, whether anyone wanted it to be or not. I take in the fresh scent of morning dews that hang so gracefully by the leaves, as if it is my last. Just about two weeks ago, I thought I'd never see this all. I've been the luckiest than most.
Usually, for funerals, people would dress up in black. But today, as unanimously requested, everyone is dressed up in white. For what? A clean slate I guess.
"I think I see less police at the bank," was the first thing Peyton to say anything as soon as we stepped out of the car.
"The media is here. Imagine something bad happening and it goes live on air. The school would shut down immediately," Jude snickered.
You can really tell how pissed Jude is. She's not even supporting them. Well, if our places are traded right now, and it was Jude's life that was in danger, I'd be more than pissed. The school should be thankful that mum talked Jude out of suing them. Because of everything that happened to me. Luckily, Howard, her loving husband is by her side. And so is little Daisy. She clings to my bigger fingers.
"Everyone is pretty!" she noticed the white dresses and suits people are wearing.
"Today is a big day," I smiled looking down at my beloved niece.
"Violet!" she suddenly called out and pointed to her.
Dressed in a simple white gown, Violet looks stunning as ever, like the model that she is. She rushes to us, gives Daisy a kiss on the head before pulling me into a hug. It seems like she doesn't want to let me go.
"When are you coming over?" I asked.
Violet flew back to where her mum is right after the police said we could go home. She did stop by at the hospital and refused to leave until mum talked her into it. So, we didn't get to meet after I woke up. It explains why it seems her hug would never end. Her brown hair flies over my face, partially covering my eyes. When we pull away, her eyes are filled with nothing but sadness.
"Can I go home with you today?" she asked in a dried voice.
"Our home is your home Violet," mum said as she hugged her.
Mum walks with her arms linked around Violet. She's always been Violet's second mum. I'm just glad Violet isn't hurt. She has a small cut up on her left cheekbone, probably getting that during the incident. I wanted to find out more but I decide to save the question for another day. Mum whispers comforting words to Violet, probably promising to make Violet her favourite pasta because her face instantly lights up. I walk hand in hand with Daisy, not so far away from her parents.
I don't think I've ever heard such silence but the sound of birds chirping. You can even hear the soft wind passing by your ears. The air is filled with grief and yet no words can soothe it down. I see few cameras are already on standby, probably announcing our arrival. It's good that they're interested in it so everyone can learn from what happened. But if it's only the sake of making profits, that's just sick; which is why I refused to do an interview. I see some news casters spotting and pointing at me, I grip Daisy's hand tighter and scoot us closer to Jude and Howard. Instinctively, Howard goes to Daisy's right while Jude comes to my left. I feel Peyton inching in closer from behind. You see, for the past week, every news reporter has been harrassing us to get my side of the story. Tara shut them down too. Mandy did the same. And I am not ready to be put in the spotlight. I probably never will be. Let's face it. I've been pushed to the centre of attention countless of times and those were not out of my voluntary act. And most of the times, things ended up pretty bad for me. So why should I?
