As the tip of my pencil touched the surface of the paper, I was entranced in the image going on in my head. Sketch marks left behind, lines curving, going here and there in their rightful spots, as I drew my thoughts in my sketchbook. It was kind of like being hypnotized, so focused on what I was doing, getting lost in my own imagination. Up to the point where my mind blocked out my surroundings and only one song kept replaying in my head as my hand moved along the page at its own pace. The image of the dream I had last night kept replaying in my mind. The endless flames of the lit up room dancing around. I'm not sure how to interpret the dream. I've never dreamt of something quite as this previous one.
I start to recall what I saw. A room on fire. I remember myself standing inside the room. However, I seemed to be unbothered by the flames. I just stood there, staring at the fire. In the faint distance, I could hear horrifying screams and cries for help. I couldn't tell if they were coming from an actual person who needed saving, or from the fire itself. Although those deafening shrieks would continue to grow louder, I still stood there, not budging. This morning I had woken up in a cold sweat. The memory of the bright, red-orange flames and screams haven't left my mind since.
As I was drawing the ends of the fire and the leftover burn marks in the room, I suddenly heard someone call out my name. "Jeongin!" I looked up to see the whole class staring at me while the teacher gave me a stern look. "I asked you a question.," he said. I just sat there silently, looking down. I could see other students snickering and muffling their laughter. "Pay more attention.," The teacher said before he turned back to the board. I looked down sheepishly, trying to hide my red face.
I looked at the person sitting diagonally from me. Seeing the face of Y/N staring back at me with a pitiful look on her face made me blush and look down again. Y/N and I were great friends, best friends if you want to call it that. However, recently we kind of got in an argument and now she won't speak to me, won't even throw me a glance. And now that she finally decided to even face my way, I just look down like a coward.
I just turned and looked out the window because I had nothing better to do. Well, I could actually listen to what the lesson is about, but that was the last thing on my mind.
I watched the dark, gray clouds pass over the school. It looked like it was going to rain soon. Just then, I saw a figure running across the schoolgrounds. They had a hoodie on so I couldn't get a good look at their face. They jumped over the school fence and just kept running. I didn't think much of it; just figured it was a student trying to skip school without being caught.
Suddenly, the fire alarm rang, causing a panic amongst the students. I just calmly stood up, thinking that it was a harmless, fire drill. As all my classmates got filed in a line just liked we've practiced times before, the student who was at front of the line, already out the classroom door, started screaming her lungs out. She was pointing towards the hallway and everyone who rushed out to see what was going on started freaking out as well.
That's when it hit me.
The smell of smoke and fire.
The teacher seemed to have noticed it too and started rushing the students out the door once he saw what was out there. As I stepped out the door, I froze. I just stood there unable to move. At the other end of the hall, I could see nothing but black smoke and students running away from it. A hoard of people ran my way, trying to get to the stairs on my side of the hall.
It was chaos.
Everybody pushing one another, screaming and running for their lives. I finally moved out of the way before I got trampled by the stampede. I wished I could just wait until most of the students left and it wasn't crowded in the hall anymore. However, the smoke began to grow thicker and all the teachers were urgently moving us forward. I got caught amongst the crowd of terrified students and had to try my best to not fall and get stepped on.
I was finally able to get down the stairs and make it outside. I looked back and the sight of the burning building was horrific. My mind went blank and all I could do was glance at everybody's panicky faces.
Looking all over the multitude of people, I tried to find Y/N. The more and more I found myself searching around and seeming lost, the more and more I came back to reality. Which I wish I didn't. The only possible scenario was that Y/N was still trapped inside the school. The firemen weren't going to arrive anytime soon and I had to do something. I rushed towards my teacher, not giving a second thought as to what I was planning to do.
