Jason turns to me and bares his teeth.
"What did you do to her?" he yelled.
Ash's eyes flutter open.
"It wasn't me." she whispers weakly. "Look up."
I glance up in time to see a hovercraft appear and pluck a bloody figure out of the trees above us. Jason sighs in relief and hugs Ash tightly.
Cameron volunteers to take first watch as the sun sets and I climb up into a tree with Amy, fishing the sleeping bag out of my backpack.
She cuddles into my side and I look up as the seal of Panem appears in the sky.
It shows a picture of the girl from District 6 labeled Breanna Slubas, and the picture of a little boy named Nate Anahalle from District 4. Poor Amy. Nate was as small as her, but there he was, dead from a beast.
Amy twists and turns, unable to sleep.
I don't expect to do this, but still, I do.
"Deep in the meadow." I sing softly. "Under the willow. A bed of grass, a soft green pillow."
Amy sighs gently, and falls asleep under the crook of my arm.
I wake up to see Cameron setting a fire under the tree, and I call him up.
"That'll lead Zelia right to us!" I whisper-shout.
He nods.
"I have a plan." he replies in a whisper.
I scramble across the branch into the next tree and wake Ash and Jason up. They see the fire and climb with me back over to Amy.
I pull Cameron's arm when I reach the next tree and he follows.
To my surprise, it isn't Zelia that runs up next.
It's Amy's teammate.
"Logan!" Amy exclaims, but I shush her as he takes out his sword.
Then, he pauses and drops it at his feet.
"Amy?" Logan whispers. "Amy, they're coming. You have to get out of here. I'll hold them off!"
Amy wipes a tear out of her eye as we hop to the ground and run towards the stream.
Shawn turns around as we approach.
"B-Bella?" he asked, rubbing the blood off a gash in his cheek.
He falls over, surrounded by a puddle of blood.
I drop to my knees and grab his arm.
"WHO DID THIS?" Amy asks, staring in shock at his wounded body.
There's no doubt in my mind.
"Zelia."
I roll him over and rub a handful of moss over his cheek. He moans gently as I start to roll him towards the stream in order to clean out a nasty wound on his leg, but he lets me anyways.
When he wakes up, he stares behind me.
"CAREERS!" he yells.
He points at Jason and starts to squirm away.
"HE HELPED HER DO IT!" Shawn points at his cheek. "HE GAVE ME THIS!"
Jason turns and starts to run.
"ASH!" he yells, but Cameron tackles Ash and pulls her into a tree. "NO!"
He trips as he tries to grab her, and I leap onto him, pinning him to the ground.
Cameron whispers something in Ash's ear before holding her out of the tree, over the ground.
Jason jumps up and tries to grab her hand, but she's too high up.
Cameron closes his eyes and lets go.
As stupid as this is, I feel myself dive forward to catch Ash as she hurtles towards the ground.
