Y/N's P.O.V
One kiss. One stupid kiss was all it took to spark the fire that should have never been started in the the first place. Luke and I barely cross paths now, thanks to me. I've been dodging him like the plague since our flight back from Nevada. The separation gave me time to reflect on how stupid it was for me to let him in. Mentally, physically, and emotionally I was so vulnerable to him. So dumb. It's the biggest mistake I've ever made; and now we sit in Boss's office three weeks after what happened in Vegas to hear the good news."Congratulations agents, you've successfully helped bring down Cartega. Government officials made an arrest on his way out of the U.S this week, along with other conspirators. He won't be a problem anymore." Boss smiled.
"Thanks, boss." Luke smiled proudly, "Maybe you can think about giving us that raise—"
"No."
"C'mon—"
"Not a penny or a word more, 01." Boss glared at him. His voice more stern and aggravated.
"...okay." Luke bit back another sarcastic response. He glanced at me, hoping I'd silently empathize with him, but I didn't. His lips molded into a frown.
"Good. That's all I had for you both—"
"Actually, I have something tell you boss," I piped up.
Both of the men looked at me with interest.
"I'm...I'm leaving."
I could feel Luke's eyes drilling holes into the side of my head. Probably wondering what the hell's gotten into me to make me want to quit the league."Leaving...?" Boss asked.
"I was offered a position as a desk agent for the FBI. I've been sitting on this opportunity for months now and I've finally decided to take it."
"Y/N...what?" Luke gasped. I couldn't bring myself to look at him. I couldn't bear seeing the hurt and confusion in his face.
"My time in the field had run its course, for now. It's become too routine and I need something new. I think soon enough I'll be able to work my way back to hands on stuff again, but who knows."
"Well, every agent has a time in their life like this. I just didn't think you'd find this moment so soon in your career...Are you sure you're ready to resign?"
"Positive. I need to work behind the scenes for a little while. I have my 2-weeks notice for you here." I pulled the trifold stack of papers from my back pocket and handed it to Boss. He looked down at it solemnly.
"I won't lie to you Agent 00, I'm sad to see you leave us after all these years. You've been my most hard working agent. We'll never have another you."
"Don't go soft on me, Rich," I teased.
"What have I told you about that?"
"I had to get one more in before I left. It was nice working with you...Boss."
"You've still got two weeks..." Boss pointed out.
He turned his attention to Luke who sat dazed in the seat beside me."Well, Agent 01, you've just been promoted. Say hello to that raise you were speaking of. You're our top agent, now. Congrats Agent 00."
Luke just nodded appreciatively. No smiling. No jokes. No celebration for becoming the top agent. Nothing like his usual self. Nothing, but a blank stare at the desk.
"Alright, I've got a meeting with recruits and I need to get this resignation letter together. Both of you, out."
Boss commanded. Both of us got up silently and walked out the door.
I tried to get to the door as fast as I could. I did, but then he grasped my arm firmly.
"After everything, you think you can leave without telling me?" I felt the anger in his voice
"I don't owe you anything, Luke. I'm a grown ass woman."
"Would a grown ass woman ignore me for three weeks instead of talking it out like a grown woman should?"
Good point.
"Why are you leaving Y/N? You and I both know you ain't trying to sit behind a desk for the rest of your career—"
"How do you know what I want?! You don't know me like that!"
"But I do, Y/N. I know you better than Boss. I know you better than you know yourself. And you know that I'm not letting you leave without giving me a real reason for you leaving."
"I don't care what you want, Luke. You won't understand my reason anyway. You don't have to. All that matters is that I made my own decision and I'm sticking to it." I didn't notice it at first, but I started to tear up.
"Are you leaving because of me? Because of what we did?" he questioned.
I lied. "No."
"Look at me and say it, Y/N. Stop being so difficult about it—"
I finally turned to him.
"Why do you care so much?! What is it with you, Luke?! What is it that's stopping you from understanding that I don't care about you enough to stay or to go?! You think that us fucking each other one time meant that there were feelings there...? That you and I would go skipping off into the sunset and be the happy little spy couple? Clearly you don't know me like you think you do. Because you would know that I don't get attached to dick so easy, Luke. I'm not a Disney princess, alright! Is this what you wanted to hear?!" I yelled so forcefully that I felt sick, but it didn't make me feel worse than how spiteful I sounded.
I was spewing out the most hateful things I could say. I just needed him to go away and stay away for good.
"Good luck with everything, Y/N. I hope you're happy," he shrugged his hands into his pockets and turned away.
"Luke...I don't want there to be bad blood between us. But-"
"Nah. It's fine. I get it. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas right?"
I had nothing to say. Neither did he. So, he walked away and I left too.
I didn't see him again after that.As I walked out of the building, I got call on my phone. Seeing the caller ID made me feel even worse, but I had to answer.
"Hello?"
"Is it done?"
"Yes, it's done. I'm leaving the agency in two weeks time,"
"Good. Remember not a word of this to anyone or I'll kill everyone you love. That includes your little boy toy. Got it?"
"Yeah," then the call was finished.
What have I gotten myself into?
TBC.
