MACKENZIE ZIEGLER smiled fakely at herself when she skimmed her eyes over her outfit in her mirror. damn, did she look good, yet she felt as if it didn't matter anymore. but it would be an offence if a ziegler didn't look top notch every single day. sometimes it got exhausting, sometimes, she dreaded this part of her routine every day.
a cashmere sweater draped over mackenzie's body elegantly, a short charcoal-coloured skirt long as to the top of her thighs swished around her legs. delman embellished flats were fitted snuggly onto her feet. she stuck a bobby pin into her mouth as she pinned her hair up, careful not to smear any of her mascara or lip gloss.
she was in the 'A-list' of imperial high, a strange and pathetic name, mackenzie thought. she might've been a higher rank, almost on her sister's level, if she wasn't such a whore. she had accepted that term a long time ago. it wasn't a secret that mackenzie ziegler, the girl in madison ziegler's shadow, fucked almost every boy in imperial high. players were popular, but you couldn't reach the top of the top if you are one. those were just the rules. stupid ones, but nonetheless, they are rules, and nothing could change that.
mackenzie was born from a wealthy family, and her ego was always boosted from compliments guys shouted in the corridor and across the street, envious looks from jealous girls and the admiring, wistful stares from her followers. her life was perfect. except, it wasn't.
mackenzie always needed to be on her best behaviour, which sucked. most of the time, she was missing out on fun activities in case she got hurt. she also needed a title, something she was known for, other than being 'madison ziegler's shadow'. a slut wasn't exactly ideal to get on her mother's good graces; so she got a boyfriend. yet, mackenzie still cheated on him, and fucked other guys just for the sake of it. she didn't want her life to be like this, yet, she couldn't stop. it was like a drug, all the guys wanting her perfect little body... she didn't want to be treated like an object. so she treated others like one. it was all so messed up, mackenzie didn't know what was right and what was wrong anymore.
johnny had found her at a party, on the brink of getting wasted and being taken advantage of, and he rescued her. mackenzie loved him for that, but he wasn't exactly mister gentleman either. their love was fading away, probably never to be retrieved. pushing the horrifying to the back of her brain, she sighed heavily. she couldn't think of anything that could cheer her up.
mackenzie remembered what her mom used to always tell her, "zieglers aren't weak, mackenzie. we're the top of the top of the food chain. and if a ziegler is weak, oh honey, they're zieglers no more."
yet, she was practically sure that those words never hit pretty little madison's ears. she didn't feel love for her sister anymore, only resentment. madison was always first, the favourite, their cousin's first choice, if was always madison. she was mom's favourite, and mom wouldn't ever do anything to hurt her eldest daughter. it wasn't fair.
she started dating boys she barely knew existed to get melissa's attention. yet, she was frowned upon for having many breakups. she wanted attention, but not in that way. it was always a lose-lose situation for mackenzie ziegler. her boyfriend barely paid attention to her anymore. her friends were faker than plastic. her dad left. she didn't have anyone, not even her own sister.
and that's why, mackenzie suddenly found herself crying, weakly clutching a bottle of pills, standing in her bathroom. she was alone. again.
