ANNIE LEBLANC dialled mackenzie's phone number for the fourth time that day, rolling her eyes in exasperation when the call went straight to voicemail. deciding to try one more time, she sighed in relief when her best friend finally answered.

"h-hello?" mackenzie muttered hoarsely, sounding as if she was crying all night and yesterday. annie frowned slightly, creasing her delicate features. "what's-" mackenzie's voice caught in her throat for a second, "up?"

"hey, uh, not to be blunt or anything, but are you crying?" annie questioned.

"no.." the brunette lied, earning a scoff from annie. "fine," she sighed, seeming to give up, "i have. so what?" she immediately said, sounding defensive.

"why?"

"jeez, why do you even need to know?" mackenzie said defiantly. there was a pause, and mackenzie groaned softly, "i don't know why i'm giving in, but um, johnny and i got into a fight." she didn't mention the same word maddie and johnny didn't say in the last chapter; again. luckily, annie said it for her.

"again?" annie sighed.

"yeah. it always had stung, y'know? but this time it was worse. way worse. i think this was the worst one yet, and that's really saying something. i don't know anns, why does this keep happening?" mackenzie sounded frustrated yet tired at the same time.

annie had to bite her tongue to stop saying wait she wanted to say; "he doesn't care about you mckenzis and he isn't worth it. please stop running back to him, you'll only hurt yourself even more." instead, she pretended she didn't know, even though she did. everyone did. everyone knew why she hooked up with other guys, it was because she wanted to get back at him. yet, it was her who always missed him. johnny might 'make it up', but deep down, he didn't care.

"i don't know kenz," annie said softly. "hasn't he made it up to you yet? chase after you? usually he would be on his knees by now."

"no!" mackenzie groaned, "maybe he's tired of running back to me all the time. maybe he wants me to go back to him...?" her explanation was pathetic, they both knew that. yet, annie wouldn't tell her johnny didn't truly love her. she didn't know if it was her place to tell.

"i.. just feel pathetic, do you get what i mean? always waiting for orlando to come back. i don't want to sit around all day and mope around, feeling sorry for myself."

annie nodded, feeling sympathetic, although she knew the younger sister of the ziegler's couldn't see her. "you should attend an art workshop or something," annie suggested. "maybe it'll take your mind off things? or go to the beach, just anything to forgot about him, at least for a little while. the summer is almost over, you're not gonna waste it feeling heartbroken over some dumb boy, are you?"

"yeah.. you're right," mackenzie sighed. "i'll look around for some workshops, maybe convince my sister to come to the beach with me." she sounded a bit more hopeful. "yeah, that's what i'll do," she decided. "thanks anns! love you, bye!"

the call went to flatline.
