High above the waters
their eyes are watching me.
Cold and dark
and the beat of my heart
feels too alive to be free.
Their stares critic me,
dare me,
accuse me
as if they are the victim
when I drown.
I tell them in my head,
"not to worry,
I can swim;"
But some days I forget.
Jesus,
teach me again.
How to kick the devil's thoughts,
to push away the waves of the past.
How to hold my breath under water
and let it go in the air.
But in case I fail,
if I fail,
when I fail;
I know there is a Lifeguard
who wants to guard my life;
for I was already dead once,
but I was found and brought back to life.
"The Lord will keep you from all harm- He will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." -Psalm 121: 7-8
