FORTY SIX — ( I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS ! )

OLIVIA HAD KNOWN SOMETHING WAS WRONG THE MOMENT HER AND TOM STEPPED FOOT IN HER APARTMENT. Tom had been acting strange all day and she had no clue why. Olivia didn't want to bother him and ask why, incase it was something he didn't want to talk about but she had enough the moment they got back and she needed to know what was wrong.

"Are you gonna tell me what's wrong or are you going to continue being weird with me?" Her voice was gentle, yet still had a hint of harshness to it and Tom noticed. He nearly jumped when he heard her voice, then again when he had realised she had clocked on to his weird behaviour.

"What's wrong? Nothing-nothing's wrong." Tom stuttered out, avoiding eye contact with his girlfriend. But when no response came back from her, he looking up at her seeing her eyebrows raised. "Can we talk for a second?" Olivia's heart dropped in her chest. Those words never meant anything good, or maybe this time they would?

Olivia nodded, following Tom to the sofa and they both sat down but with some space in between them. Olivia began to get nervous, her palms sweating as she fiddled with her fingers in her lap.

"Before I say anything, I just want to tell you that I don't want to do this, I really don't but I can't think of any other way to deal with it and I'm sorry." This was it, Olivia thought. He was going to break up with her and then that's another 4 or 5 months of her life trying to get over him. She couldn't do that, not again. "You're going away, for 4 months, and that's a long fucking time. I don't know if I can deal with not seeing you for that long, Liv. I know it sounds stupid but things could happen, lots of thing and I don't want either of us getting hurt. So, I think, maybe, we should go on a break." A break. That's all Tom wanted. He didn't want to break up, not entirely. He wanted a break so that when she was finished, they could just go back to how they were.

Olivia didn't understand. She couldn't quite wrap her head around what Tom had just said. "A break? What-what do you mean, a break? I don't understand"

"Just till you get back. Then we can just carry on, it'll be okay." Tom reached over to grab her hand but the girl didn't want any comforting. Olivia stood up, walking away from Tom, into the kitchen. Tom could still see Olivia though, because her apartment was mostly open. He watched as her hands went up to her hair, holding her head. He watched as her eyes filled with tears as she started breathing heavier.

"You're joking, right? Please tell me you're joking."

"Liv, I'm sorry. But I just can't do the long distance for that long." Tom tried to get her to understand where he was coming from. He had never had to make it work with someone long distance for that long, so he didn't know if he could.

"So you want a break? We're not Ross and Rachel, for fucks sake. Who even goes on breaks anymore." The tone of Olivia's voice had got harsher. Tom could tell she was getting angry.

"It's just for 4 months-"

"Oh yeah, only 4 months! What do you expect me to do for 4 months? I can't believe this. I can't believe you!" Olivia paced around her kitchen, getting angrier and angrier at the boy standing in her living room. "You know what, if you want a break, then I'm done. This is over." Olivia had stopped pacing in her kitchen, had lowered her arms and crossed them over her chest and was then facing Tom.

Now it was time for Tom's heart to drop in his chest, his time to feel what Olivia was feeling. He knew Olivia wouldn't take it well but he didn't expect that.

"If you want to be stupid enough to think we wouldn't make it work and suggest a break then we're over, and I mean that." Olivia's voice was quieter, mostly because she was close to tears and she didn't want to cry, not in front of Tom.

"Liv, please don't do this-"

"Don't do this? This is your fault, Tom! I don't want to go on a stupid break, so I'm doing this before you can. We're done, and I want you to leave." Olivia felt a couple tears run down her cheek but she ignored them as she ordered Tom to leave her apartment. Tom had no choice but to do what she said, he didn't want to make her more angry. Luckily for him, he hadn't taken hardly anything out of his suitcase so all he had to do was go into Liv's bedroom and get his suitcase, which he did.

When Tom walked back into the main part of Olivia's apartment, he saw her leaning on the kitchen island with her face in her hands. All he wanted to do was go over and hug her, make her feel better but it was too late for that. He had messed up, messed up real bad. Tom hadn't planned for it to go the way it did but it was too late. He had broken Olivia's heart and he couldn't go back.

Olivia heard Tom's footsteps, but chose to ignore them. The sound of the front door opening was next and then something she wasn't expecting, Tom's voice. An I'm sorry was whispered before the door was shut and Olivia broke. She cried and cried, till her eyes started to hurt but it was nothing compared to what her chest was feeling. That's when she slipped out her phone from her back pocket and texted someone she knew was free that day and wouldn't take long to arrive.
