In many shows on television today, the specific ages of most characters are not said. While this is true for the show Wynonna Earp, there are constant hints given about the characters' ages. Looking and listening closely to various details, in both the setting and the script, can make it easy to piece together how old certain characters are. Ages are more important than some might think when it comes to understanding a storyline. Knowing how old somebody is can establish character traits that may not have previously been clear.
Figuring out the age of Waverly Earp was definitely easier than I had expected it to be. While her age is never spoken throughout the series, so far, it is established in the second episode. Her current age can be found through details of events that took place prior to the date of the first episode. During a conversation with a deputy marshal, it is revealed that Waverly was six years old while her sister, Wynonna, was 12. Establishing this age gap has made it possible to determine Waverly's current age, based on Wynonna's current age. Wynonna's age, 27 years, was stated at the beginning of the first episode during a conversation with the same deputy marshal. So, with a six-year age gap between the sisters, Waverly must be 21 years old, in season one.
Another Earp sister, Willa, is brought into the story at the end of the first season. Her exact age, just like Waverly's, was never spoken. However, her age had been established before she entered the current storyline. In one scene, Wynonna is looking through their childhood home and stops to look over an old doorframe. On the doorframe, Willa's height was recorded along with her age and the year. This shows that Willa was 10 years old in 1997, meaning she was born in 1987. The current year in season one was 2016, given this information, Willa's age in season one was 29.
Knowing the ages of both Willa and Waverly Earp builds pieces of each of their characters. Waverly's age shows that she is hard working and intelligent. It is known that she has already graduated college with a degree in ancient cultures and languages. Most college graduates are 23 or 24 years old, which shows that Waverly must have spent a lot of time and effort on her studies to have graduated either before or at the age of 21. Willa's age establishes how old she was when she got kidnapped. Waverly was six and Wynonna was 12, so based on the age gaps, Willa was 14 when she was taken.
The clues to figure out their ages are scattered all throughout the show. Finding the hidden hints makes the show more enjoyable. Waverly and Willa's ages have made certain parts of the show easier to understand. A person's age expands on who they are, whether it be directly or indirectly. This knowledge fills in several gaps in these characters' storylines. It's also a little bit funny because sometimes the writer makes a mistake and messes up a previously established timeline. So, I honestly believe that taking the time to look for these details is worth it.
