Aiden and Michael were talking on the phone again.

Maybe I should have felt bad for eavesdropping.

But I didn't.

He was in his room, the door was closed, but the walls were thin, and our rooms were right next to each other.

My bed stood against his, I was sitting there, my head leaning against the wall.

He sat on his bed, probably doing the same.

"This is just as hard for me as it is for you, mate."

"No, Michael, believe me, I get how you feel. Even though I am here there is nothing I can do. I know that she's sad and I can hear her crying herself to sleep nearly every night, but I feel so helpless 'cause there is nothing I can do to help her, at least nothing I can think of. It's not that simple anymore. When we were younger, and she was upset sometimes all it needed for her to feel okay again was playing video games together, and when she was like 14 to 17 it was letting her talk about bands as much as she wanted to, and that was easy 'cause I knew what to do. I didn't care that I didn't even know the bands, I just loved seeing her smile, and that was worth everything. But it's just not that easy anymore, then even though I'm trying to, I can't think of anything that would make her happy or that would help her. I love Adley so much, she's the most important person in my life, and seeing her like that breaks my heart just as much as it breaks yours."

"You make her happy. It doesn't matter that you aren't around as much as you want to, or that she's not around that much. All your calls and texts make her happy. You're doing great, Mike, it's okay."

“I remember one time our dad got home and mum freaked out and they were screaming and fighting and dad wanted custody over us... well, over Adley, I was already 19. And I didn't know where she was, I just heard our parents fighting donwstairs. I was looking for her and I found her hiding under her desk with her earphones plugged in and she was blasting your music on full volume and she was crying. I just sat down next to her and we sat there without saying anything for a pretty long time, until she calmed down. She took the earphones out of her ear and asked me if she could show me a video, it was totally random and I was a little confused at first, but of course I said yes. We completely ignored what was going on downstairs“, he laughed, “She'd kill me if she knew I was telling you this.“

Jokes on you, Aiden.

“It was an interview with your band and it was so adorable to see how her face lit up whenever you started talking or smiling. She was rambling about every single one of you, and to be honest, I had absolutely no idea what she was trying to tell me, but it was the cutest and I promised myself that I will do everything I can that one day she'll always feel as happy as she felt when she watched videos of you, listened to your music or whatever.“

“You don't even know how much of a fangirl she is“ he giggled.

He was right.

I will kill him.

"Yeah", I could hear him chuckle, "I don't know, I like her and everything, but I need some space at the moment. We're not even official or anything. She's a very nice girl but I don't want to rush things. We just had like two proper dates and besides that we're mostly just hanging around.“

I liked to hear Aiden talking about Maddy, it was easy for him. She seemed to take his mind off of stressful things and she most certainly makes his day every time they see each other, and I knew she was important to him. I haven't met her but judging on the way Aiden's voice changed and his face lit up whenever he talked about her I could tell that she was very kind and sweet.

It was silent for a few minutes, I couldn't hear anything but my own breathing.

Until Aiden laughed, "Wait, you're serious, buddy?" His voice was a bit higher than usual, he sounded thrilled and happy. "No, oh my god, no. But do you really think that's the right time?"

"That's great, oh my... wow... I'm, uh, I don't know."

"Don't worry, it's fine."

"That's so exciting!"

"Yeah, of course, definitely."

I had absolutely no idea what was going on.

"Sure, you can, I'd love to help, but Layla will probably have a better opinion than I."

“That's great news, thanks for telling me.“

He sighed, “I can't tell. Might be both ways. I have no idea what's going on inside her mind at the moment. She'll definitely freak out though, not sure in a positive or negative way.

“No, no, I'm not trying to get this idea out of your mind, I swear. I think it's a good thing, really.“

“You'll be fine, it'll be cool, I'm sure.“

“No, I haven't been to work the whole week, I'm scared to leave her alone...“ he trailed off.

“Don't worry, I'm sure she'll be fine, I didn't want to scare you.“

“Don't you have an interview to get to, Mike?“

And when at that point I realised that Michael didn't respond to my texts, but was talking with Aiden, when I realised that Aiden knew about the interview I didn't know about, I felt tears running down my cheeks.
