Michael slept peacefully beside Luke, hugging onot the younger boy. Luke stared at him with hate in his eyes as he thought of all of the ways he could get out of this. Luke pulled himself up carefully and sat against the partition as Michael hugged onto his legs instead of his torso. He pulled against the handcuff that bound his left wrist, trying to get it undone. He groaned in frustration and looked at his captor, reaching over to feel in his pocket. He felt the keys and slowly pulled them out, sighing in relief when Michael didn't move. Luke quietly unlocked himself and set the handcuffs on the floor next to himself. He gently grabbed Michael by the wrist and guided his arm away from himself, causing the boy to stir in place. He froze as Michael flipped over and started snoring. Luke put on the flannel shirt Michael had allowed him to use as a pillow and snuck over to the back door, attempting to open it. He fidgeted with the handle, but the doors wouldn't budge. L-luke walked back over to the partition and found that the window was collapsible and folded it down just enough that he could probably sneak through. He stuck one of his ridiculously long legs through and then the other, allowing himself to slip through entirely before replacing the window. He took a deep breath and saw his shoes in the back seat, causing a sigh of relief. He quickly slipped them on before getting out of the vehicle. The cold night air stung his skin as he stepped into the wilderness and Luke turned in a circle to see where he was. He was surrounded by trees in every direction, and in all honesty, he had no idea where in the country he was. A walk in one direction could likely lead to the ocean, another could lead to the outback that would likely kill him, and the others could probably lead to some sort of civilization. Luke shivered once again as he buttoned up his shirt. He really wished he had some pants and a jacket right about now. He began following the path that the car had traveled, hoping to find some kind of a road rather than some animal ready to kick his ass. He walked down the path for about an hour, rather surprised that Michael hadn't followed him yet when a sudden noise in the woods froze him in his place. A low growling sound came from nearby as Luke stood in place, looking through the trees.
"Please, God, be a koala bear..." he whispered. Soft thumping began coming towards him and he backed up slowly before seeing an outline hopping towards him. "God... not a kangaroo he begged, watching the large animal hopping towards him. Ever since he was a child, he had been terrified of kangaroos. His father had taken him to the Australian Zoo, because Like had always wanted to be like Steve Irwin, and they were allowed to feed a mother kangaroo. Once Luke ran out of food, she became angry and punched at him, scratching his face with her awful claws. He still had a small scar on his cheek from the incident, and ever since he hated the animals. His mother was always angry about the incident, but Luke was sure that it was because she was looking at every reason to be mad at Andrew so she didn't have to feel so guilty about breaking his heart.
The kangaroo hopped out of the forest just as Luke picked up a large branch that sat next to him on the ground. He turned sideways to seem narrower to the creature. After being attacked, Andrew taught Luke what to do in case he ever faced the animal again, that way he wouldn't have to be afraid. But right now, Luke was absolutely terrified.
"I-it's okay, girl," he said softly, walking away from it slowly to the side. "W-we can just go our separate ways..." the animal growled again and took a large hop forward, causing a small squeak to escape Luke's lips. He heard the snap of a twig behind him and saw Michael appear, feeling even more panic rise in his chest. Face the kangaroo or the boy he had run away from?
"M-Mikey," he whispered. "I-I can explain..." Michael came up behind him and put his hand on his back, staring at the animal. "I wasn't running away, I s-swear... I-I just wanted to get some air and I got lost... I'm sorry..."
"You could have woken me up," hd snapped. "You could've been killed out here..."
"I see that now, but I don't even know where we are-" the kangaroo jumped forward again and Luke squealed before dropping his branch and hiding behind Michael. He turned and laughed at the boy before reaching down and picking a handful of grass along with a few flowers and stepping forward cautiously with his hand out. The kangaroo sniffed at his hnad before taking the food and eating it.
"Come on," Michael demanded, pulling Luke away while the animal was preoccupied. He led him to the car that was parked on a nearby road and opened the back door. "Get in..." Luke did as he was told and sat in his usual spot, looking down at the ground. Michael hopped in after the boy and closed the door before clicking on a light.
"You need to stop leaving me," he said, sitting beside the younger boy. "I hate when you leave me..."
"I'm sorry," Luke lied. "I-I didn't mean to..." Michael looked over and smiled lightly, putting their lips together gently.
"Let's do something we haven't done in a while," he whispered, pulling Like by the hips so that he was laying down. Michael straddled him and reconnected their lips as Luke tried to steady his breathing. He was having to relive the most traumatic moments of his life.
