People say, you only live once. But people are as wrong about that as they are about everything. In the darkest moments before dawn, a woman returns to her bed. What life is she leading? Is it the same life she was leading half an hour ago? A day ago? A year ago?
Who is this man? Do they lead single lives? Or is it a single life shared?
"Do you love me?" she asks in a sultry whisper. He strokes her cheek with lust filling his eyes.
"Yeah, do you want me to prove it to you?" he asks.
"If you're not too sleepy."
A storm approaches. It is still over the horizon, but there is lightening in the air. Are either of them aware of the gathering turbulence? Can they feel the crackle of electricity in the wind? Or are they aware of the only power that they generate between themselves?
"I love when you do that." he groans. She just chuckles, continuing to please her lover...
The first hint of this storm in not the thunderclap. It is a knock.
A loud knock erupts through the apartment, waking the soundly sleeping couple. They ignored it, trying to fall back asleep, but the person at their door was determined.
"Get it." Reese groans and gently kicks his shin.
"No! You get it!" Sebastian groaned back.
"You get it!" she whined.
"Get it!" he said. Reese reached over and grabbed the covers off of Sebastian, making him groan in annoyance. Reese just giggles and snuggles back into the sheets. While Sebastian, sits up and grabs his shirt and boxers, as the knocking on the door continues. "Great, I get it."
He switches on the hallway light and shuffles over to the door. "Yeah! Yeah! I'm coming!" he hollers the his unknown company. His hand yanks open the door, to a surprised young lady in a pant suit. She was very surprised to see Mr. Smythe in only a t-shirt and a pair of heart print boxers.
"Good morning. I'm Detective Fabray." she introduced herself.
"Yeah, yeah I know who you are, you're my cousin partner." Sebastian said.
"She prefers the term 'boss'." his cousin, Hunter, cut in.
"Official visit. See the badge?" the pretty blonde detective held up her badge for the young man.
"What's going on?" Reese came out wrapped in her red silk robe.
"Uh, a body was found at your nightclub." Detective Fabray told them. Sebastian and Reese looked at each other, not believing what was coming out of the detective's mouth. But Detective Quinn was one of the best law enforcers in the business, and she would never lie about something so serious like this. Especially when a case was filed in their business.
-
Their nightclub -- The New Warbler -- was a snazzy joint run by some of the best employees that Sebastian and Reese could find. Their employees were dependable, and were incredibly kind to their customers. The club was one of the best hangout spots in Ohio, at least, it was, until a body was found in the club.
"So who was still at work when you left?" Sebastian asked Reese as they got out of their car.
"Kurt came in just before four, he brought the car around for me. And then Sam was supposed to come in at five to do inventory." she replied. Sebastian sighed and pulled on his jacket. "Do you think it was one of them?" she asked him. He sighed as they started in.
"Well you know what, they should've said more than 'there's a body'." he replied.
-
"They found him laying in the bathroom." Kurt -- the club's manager -- reported.
"Is it terrible?" she asked him.
"When Kurt saw it, he screamed." Sam -- their head chef -- responded. "I heard him from the kitchen."
"Yelped, not screamed!" Kurt protested. Detective Fabray came out and met the couple.
"Ready?" she asked them.
"I was taken aback!" Kurt told his bosses as they followed the detective. Sam scoffed.
"It was a scream."
She had never seen a dead body before. He was in the Army and had seen too many.
Detective Fabray led them into the men's bathroom, and pushed open the stall door. In the stall was a man, who was very pale and had a gaping bullet whole in his chest, with blood smeared on the tile walls. Reese gripped onto her boyfriend's arm tightly, her heart swelling with fear.
"Recognize him?" Detective Clarington asked.
"No." they both replied simoultaneously. Detectives Fabray and Clarington looked at eachother, than at Reese.
"You didn't see this guy last night?" he asked her.
"No." she replied, staring cautiously at the body.
"Neither of us were on the floor much last night." Sebastian said.
"What about this?" Hunter crouched down and poked a small packet of matches with his pen. "You ever hear of a place called Amicalengelo's?" he asked. The couple told him 'No'.
"Which one is closer to the washroom? The kitchen or your office?" Detective Fabray asked Reese.
"My office." she replied.
"How is it that the chef heard your manager shout, yet you didn't hear a gunshot?" she asked her.
"Maybe I'd already gone home?" Reese guessed. "I left as four AM."
"Blood coagulation suggests time of death occured between one and three AM." Clarington said.
"Obviously you weren't where you said you were, so where were you?" Fabray asked her again.
"From midnight until four AM, I was in my office. Then I went home." she replied. The detectives looked at each other, not buying her story at all.
"Come on let's go." Sebastian wrapped his arm around Reese and led her out of the bathroom. Fabray looked at her partner.
"You think that was insensitive?" she asked him.
"I don't know. Implying that she was cheating on her boyfriend maybe could've waited until he wasn't standing right next to her." he replied.
"Why? They bust up and you finally get a crack at her." she said. "That's what you want, right?"
